CBS have today announced an official release date for the sophomore season of Star Trek: The Next Generation on blu-ray. The 5-disc set is due for release on December 4 in the U.S. and Canadian markets. Furthermore, an initial outline of bonus features has also been published to give fans an idea of what’s to come on the set:

  • Episodic Promos
  • Gag Reel
  • Audio Commentary on “Q Who” with Dan Curry, Rob Bowman and Mike Okuda
  • Audio Commentary on “The Measure of a Man” with Melinda Snodgrass, Robert Scheerer and Mike Okuda
  • Featurette: Reunification: 25 Years After The Next Generation (HD)
  • The Measure of a Man (HD Extended Version)
  • Featurette: Making It So: Continuing The Next Generation (HD)
  • All SD features originally included on the DVD release

CBS should be releasing a more detailed breakdown of these features in due course. Be prepared for some amazing surprises in the Season 2 set… whilst we can’t publish any of the details just yet, I assure you that the TNG-R Season 2 Blu-Rays could quite easily go down in Trek history as the BEST Star Trek home entertainment release ever produced. Watch this space!

Finally – a quick note on our interview with CBS Digital. I spoke to the multi-talented crew headed up by Craig Weiss last Friday. I was able to put many of your questions to Craig and the team, and will be publishing the interview in full starting next week. Thanks to everyone for all their emails and questions!

    great! Cant wait!

  • Great! Thanks for the info!

  • Chris

    Very excited for this!

  • Quinn

Maybe a new interview with Diana Muldaur? Or, crazy thought, a sit-down with Diana Muldaur and Gates McFadden!? I can’t wait to find out!

    • scarecroe

      That sit-down would be amazing.

  • Billy Morris

    Whhooo hooo! I can’t wait :P”’

  • Riker

I not only love it, I gonna marry it 😉 🙂 CAN’T WAIT FOR IT AS WELL!!!!!!

  • Is Dianna Muldaur still alive? She’s gotta be pushing 85-90 yrs old now.

    • She’s 74 and still very much alive.

    • Quinn

Yeah, she was at the big Trek convention in Las Vegas last month.

  • Matt Littledyke

Excellent Can’t wait. I have already preordered my copy on Amazon

  • Ashley Williams

by SD features does that include any commentaries that were originally present. I don’t recall if there were any anyways. I only have season 4 on DVD. (I was disappointed with the lack of quality so I held off)

    • archer923

They didn’t make any commentaries for season 2 episodes. When they made those theme sets.

  • archer923

Even more bonus features. They really want people to buy season 2.

  • Wes

Are there going to be any significant problems like the Season 1 blu-ray set had? Because I doubt that CBS doesn’t want to go through that hassle again, and if they do, they will probably delay the box set.

    • Riker

I’m sure the quality control department is ordered to keep an even stronger eye on any eventual occurring problems that might would show up in later seasons! I think mistakes a there to learn from it and I’m sure (I hope) our remastering team did!

  • adamclark83

What if for future season releases, they had some fan commentaries? I would love to do one of those.

  • Anyone else racking their brain trying to figure out what surprises in the season 2 set could make it” quite easily go down in Trek history as the BEST Star Trek home entertainment release ever produced”? That’s a hell of a tease.

    • Quinn

Shatner commentary. It would be like watching a movie with your grandparents – Who’s that? What’re they doing? In my day, we had to walk uphill both ways back and forth to the set.

  • DonDonP1

Fascinating. Hope the TNG Season 2 Blu-ray would include a teaser for “Star Trek XII,” if possible.

    • Chris Jay

      Why should it? O_o

      This is TNG, not Abrams-verse…

  • Pez1979

With any luck – this should mean we can expect Season 3 around May 2013.

  • Bjoernar Dohm

Amazon lists the extended cut of “Measure of A Man” not as entirely HD but as a “‘hybrid’…, using the high-definition version of the original television episode, plus rough VHS video of deleted scenes and different camera angles from that episode’s ‘lost’ first cut.”

    • Chris Jay

I or someone at TrekCore can ask the Okuda’s for clarification, if necessary.

  • Riker

Can anybody tell which issues exactly have been fixed in the season 1 replaced discs??

    • Chris Jay

Aside from the sound issues, some VFX related stuff, as far as I know that’s it.

  • DPC

Looking forward to December! And to seasons 3-7 as well! But Season 2 is when the show really takes off; I’m not surprised that season 1’s sales will be lower by comparison…

  • Stephen

$90 from Amazon!! Season One was only $60. Hopefully it’ll come down before release, and the price guarantee will kick-in.

  • Irish-Toffee

BEST Star Trek home entertainment release ever produced. Watch this space! Well to lead with that it must be something really really big, we’ve already heard about the extended MOAM episode with not as much fanfare – so am I too far fetched to suggest a missing/ unaired episode!?

    • trekcore

Certainly nothing as grand as a missing/unaired episode!

      • Irish-Toffee

Thanks trekcore, I admit was getting carried away with myself there! I’ll re-seat my thinking cap.

  • The big surprise will be the STAR TREK PHASE II test footage restored and on a bonus disc or something? I tend to think so … 😀
