As we reported earlier this month, CBS are planning the release of a special feature-length edit of “The Best of Both Worlds” on Blu-Ray to coincide with the release of Season 3 of Star Trek: The Next Generation. We’ve got our hands on some high-resolution cover art for the special disc which features a stark image of Locutus of Borg locked in a soulless stare.

The special release will come with its very own exclusive set of Borg-themed special features, including a featurette, all new audio commentary and gag reel. These features are set to be exclusive to this disc, and because of the feature-length nature of the edit, the audio commentary won’t be split over the Season 3 and 4 sets. We expect CBS to release a special trailer for the disc within the next month along with a fully detailed press release – so stay tuned for that all that information!

Fans in the US & Canada should expect a release date of April 30 for this disc (the same day Season 3 is set to hit shelves). Fans in the UK can get their copy one day early, as Paramount Home Entertainment (UK) have nominated April 29 as their release date. UK fans can already pre-order their copy for the ridiculously cheap price of just £10.49 now at Amazon.co.uk! We’ll bring you pre-order information for the U.S. as soon as we get it.

In the meantime, a few updates from Season 3. The latest cover art we’ve received presents a slightly different shade of green to the lemon yellow/lime green mockup we brought you last year. Here’s a higher resolution copy:

The cover features images of Captain Picard, Geordi La Forge and Beverly Crusher (albeit from a Season 6 publicity shot by the looks of it, with her later-season hairstyle). The third season set contains another epic array of extras, with a wonderful array of new audio commentaries (including fan favorite episodes “Yesterday’s Enterprise” and “Sins of the Father“), the continuation of the ever-growing TNG documentary with another three-part bonanza entitled “Resistance is Futile”, a special tribute to Michael Piller, a brand new gag reel and of course the much anticipated “In the Writer’s Room” feature, showcasing Brannon Braga, Ronald D. Moore, René Echevarria and Naren Shankar geeking out for over an hour under the supervision of Trekkie extraordinaire Seth MacFarlane.

UK fans can pre-order the set now at Amazon.co.uk, again for a delivery date of April 29.

We’ll have all the latest developments, including official press releases from CBS, as and when they are issued! In the meantime, if you’re in the UK – lock in your pre-orders for Season 3 and “The Best of Both Worlds” below! Resistance is indeed Futile!

  • Ashley Williams

Ugg They are going to make be buy the BOBW rather than including it in either season 3 or 4 aren’t they. Jerks. If I was in charge of this project the feature length version of every cliff hanger would be included as a bonus feature in the season that started it. I would probably still sell BOBW separately, but nothing exclusive.

    • Corran

No, they are not. If you read the article it says one of the commentaries is exclusive to the best of both worlds set because they didn’t want to split it on the season releases.

      • Ashley Williams

That’s why it (including the feature length version) should be on season 3’s bonus features list. We got multiple versions of “The Measure of a Man”, so why can’t we do that with BOBW?

        • Quinn

Season 2 had four fewer episodes compared to the other seasons, so they had more breathing room to fit extra content onto the discs. To include the BOBW theatrical edit, the S3 set would have to expand to seven discs which adds a lot of extra cost to the packaging and delivery side of things.

  • Quinn

Lovely – I like the green!

    • Matt Littledyke

Me too I think it fits the theme of the season

  • Chris

Whoa! 77.20GBP for season 3. I know it’s good, but that good!? Hurry up and add your discounts Amazon 🙂

Looks like I’ll be picking up BOBW too for the exclusive extras at some point too. As they say, resistance is futile!

    • Neill Stringer

I am def getting it but I am sure it will be going down in price.

    • Ashley Williams

I seem to recall Season 1 and Season 2 being over $100 originally. Buy the time both were released they were around the $50 range. People keep freaking out over the prices and yet they keep ending up being reasonable. My complaint this time is that I intend to buy all seasons as they come out, but they are insisting on doing extras for BOBW that won’t be on season 3 & 4.

    • SillyTilly

I was about to pre-order season 3 but then saw the price and I am going to wait to see if it lowers. No way am I paying £77.

      • Chris

I’m sure it will. All the others started pretty high and reduced quite quickly before release.

  • Neill Stringer

Getting this one, but I really hope the price goes down as it is £25 dearer

  • $12900556

It’s coming out late April. I thought it was sooner than that. Not sure if I will buy the BOBW set but really looking forward to the season 3 release.

    • Ashley Williams

3 seasons in 12 months = 4 month spans. month 4 is April. That was the latest, but still on schedule.

      • Chris

April for Season 3, August for Season 4, December for Season 5, April 2014 for Season 6, August 2014 for Season 7. Deep Space Nine for December 2014!!!! Pleas please please please!!

The above is just my speculation.

        • Matt Littledyke

I think you’ll have to wait longer than that for a DS9 release as it will take a lot of work for some of the effects to be redone but in the meantime you can treat yourself to this and possibly enterprise

          • Andyperkins

The first few seasons of DS9 were models so should be no more difficult than TNG, its the later CG heavy seasons that will cause issues.

          • archer923

Seasons 6 and 7 are CGI. It’s voyager that switched over in 3. Voyager will be the harder one (more shots). In the case of CGI work.

          • $38633853

They might’ve switched over mostly to CG in Season 3, but Voyager had CG from the get-go, the title credits contained 3 CG shots… plus the final shot of Caretaker is CG, not to mention the caretaker himself…

          • archer923

I know all the shows had CGI here and there. TNG had CGI with the Crystal Entity, Galaxy’s Child, and Masks. I’m just saying Voyager will be harder since it’s 4 seasons VS 2 for DS9. The hardest moments would be the war shots. Odo, to a degree. And Ship in a Bottle. Voyager has a ton of Borg stuff. The water planet will be hell. The cloned ship, and the crash landing sequence, murder. For example.

          • $38633853

Well, the water planet will only be hard for the underwater stuff, but I can easily make a water world in CG…

The crash landing would probably be faster to do these days due to the improvements in workflows, etc. I mean look at all the CG in movies these days… of course the CG Voyager model will likely need some touch up work, heck an all new CG model, as the CG model isn’t up to HD, at least where textures are concerned, it’s modeled detailed is fine just a few tweaks but the textures were designed for SD viewing…

          • archer923

The remastering project has bad time constraints. I added that in.

  • Mat Rowe

I hate how much of a sucker I am for VAM. I’ll end up buying both Season 3 and the BOBW release, but I’ll wait a month or two after release for the latter to drop in price.

    • Ashley Williams

I’m considering waiting for season 4 to see if they change their minds and put it on that. Personally I care more about the feature length version than the VAM, but that’s important too. Worst case I could always rip parts 1 & 2 and edit them together I guess.

      • Quinn

You’d put in all that work rather than spend less than $20 to have it done professionally with the extra features?

        • archer923

I could easily match what they’ll do. It’s just gonna be some tweaks with the music. The removal of the title sequence, To Be Continued screen, recap, and title cards.

          • Justin Olson

How are you going to remove the blue credits over Act One of Part II? ;^)

          • archer923

By simply using frames of it before and after. Then paint out when needed. It’s not really a lot of work. I’ve edited all the lord of the rings movie parts for my media player.

          • Justin Olson

Well, only you can decide if it’s worth it for your time to do something like that, but that’s definitely hours and hours of work, no question. That kind of technique is more suited for objects that appear for a few frames (like film damage)… but those credits last for several seconds each while objects in the frame move behind them. You’re going to have to do a lot of frame by frame painting to fix objects that are moving.

Not to mention the fact that you’re going to have to re-compress the images. Knock yourself out, but speaking personally, I’d rather pay $10-$15 bucks for the professionally done product and save myself the trouble. 🙂

          • archer923

Re-compress, so. I do this type of work for a living. It goes on my ipod touch. It’s gonna be compressed regardless. As for the title card. It’s real easy. It originally popped up on a stock ENT effect shot. I’d just find a earlier episode that had the shot and block out the title text. Now all the other text I wouldn’t bother with. That be a lot of work. I just don’t see any real worth in buying this two episode set. When I’ll just wait for s4.

          • Justin Olson

I see. Well, if it’s just for your iPod, you might as well leave the title for Part II. It’d be odd to go to all that trouble of removing the title, but leave the credits over the rest of Act One. Remember also that there are a couple of cast credits over that shot… and, I don’t think that the Enterprise was used clean over stars before BOBW II and at that specific length.

            http://tng.trekcore.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=74&page=3

          • archer923

The screen was only on there for 7 seconds. There’s a ep in season 2 (or later) where there’s a log entry being said over it. I find doing this stuff fun.

  • Justin Olson

Not sure I like that BOBW cover art. It’s just a season two publicity still of Patrick Stewart as Picard with borg implants and costume pasted on in Photoshop (with a few other lighting and color tweaks). He doesn’t have the expression on his face that you would expect Locutus to have. He just looks like Picard.

    http://tng.trekcore.com/bluray/images/s2cinema_poster.jpg

    • I agree about the BOBW cover art. It’s simply not good. Hopefully they have some other options floating around at CBS.

    • Ashley Williams

They changed the enterprise art after the fans complained.

    • Matt_Cardiff_UK

Agreed – not good enough dammit – not good enough!

    • pittrek

You’re too polite. The cover is HORRIBLE. Absolutely HORRIBLE. It deserves a place between other Photoshop disasters (http://www.psdisasters.com/)

  • James

Hilariously bad artwork there. Did someone actually get paid for this trash? Utterly, utterly terrible 🙁

  • Matt Littledyke

I can’t believe that the season 3 boxset is listed on Amazon as costing £77.20 what’s going on the first 2 seasons cost at least £40-£50 hope this is just a provisional price and not the final price because that will be a real slap in the face

    • Quinn

As with every other set released so far, the price will drop as we approach the release date.

      • Pablo

well, the prices may have dropped in the states. But season 1 & 2 in the Uk/Ireland were promoted at the price they ended up selling at from day one of pre-ordering being possible. I sincerely hope it drops from 77 £ sterling. Thats a lot of money for a season of a tv show that is over 20 years old

        • Andyperkins

There are other places to order besides Amazon, I got TNG S2 from TheHut for £43 on release and Sainsbury’s Entertainment currently have TNG S3 at £50.99

          • Pablo

I live in Ireland, have no choice but to order from Amazon hence the hopes that the price will drop!

          • Andyperkins

I am certain it will, TNG S2 was £47 from them the Friday before release but over the weekend they kept raising the price until it was £55 on release day so always a good idea to keep an eye on their site near release.

  • Fluba09

I wish this was still more yellow – I liked how the blu-ray packaging colors were mirroring the original DVD packaging colors. I get the choice of the green – more Borg-like, most likely – but I still wish they were going with the yellower packaging. Also, I agree on the BOBW cover – looks kinda cheesy.

  • Sky

The BOBW Cover don’t fits and don’t reflects the quality of what is inside the blu ray box (the episode)!!

  • pittrek

I have just pre-ordered the BOBW disc but I’ll be pretty mad if they release it as a season 4 bonus 🙂

    • archer923

You know everything from this set will be available in S4. Or they’ll just get lots of hate if the so called “exclusive” material is omitted from S4. When they promised the BR sets would be the completist sets. It’s being made for people who don’t care about season sets. Or can’t wait.

      • Quinn

The feature-length commentary probably will not be on any other release (aside from a hypothetical full-season set that may include the disc).

        • archer923

They could break the commentary at the split point. Then resume it.

  • Mike C.

Hey, TREKCORE: Do you know if the commercial breaks will be edited out so that it is more like a movie? THX.

    • trekcore

If you mean the “fade to black” moments, I don’t think so.

      • Mike C.

        I did. Thanks. Too bad.

        • Justin Olson

Well, you can’t remove the commercial break fade outs without cutting off moments of Ron Jones’ great score. And the only musical piece that has to be lost in the interests of combining both parts is Jones’ climatic music to Part I. Instead, they’ll probably use his alternate cue from the recap in Part II.

          • Matt Littledyke

As I recall when they last edited the best of both worlds into feature length back in the 90’s they cut about 10 seconds of footage from the beginning of part 2 when they are powering up the deflector after Riker’s says fire it just goes straight to the bit where the deflector fires

  • Alex

On Amazon the S3 release misses the K in Trek so doesn’t come up in the main searches!

    • Quinn

Is that Amazon US? If so, could you please post a link?

      • Matt Littledyke

I think it it was just the UK Amazon that did that by mistake but they corrected it the other week so it’s easier to find now.

  • David Wyatt

Has there been any word on extra scenes? I think I would only buy this if there was an extended cut.

    • Quinn

I wouldn’t expect any – I think we would have heard about ’em by now.

  • New Horizon

From what I read further down, they’re not getting rid of the fade to black? I thought this was supposed to be a feature length edit? It kind of implied that they were doing something special with the episode beyond running the episodes together on one disk.

    • Quinn

No television Trek has ever been released with the commercial breaks edited out – this release will have Parts I and II together as one long, ninety-minute episode, but the act breaks will still be part of the presentation.

    • archer923

That would require rediting and rescoring of transition points. How would you edit around the grave yard commercial break, for example. You’d have to cut one shot out. And people would get annoyed. Only Stargate has done that for home releases.

  • Matt Littledyke

Sold my season 3 DVD’s on Amazon and got nectar voucher for Amazon before they stopped doing it over there the other week so roll on April as I have ordered both the season set and the best of both worlds feature. It still comes at an expense as I have also ordered the enterprise season 1 set but I am a fan after all.

  • Smashing

£77 pounds? it’s gone up by £30, outrageous.

  • archer923

Thanks to that new ST.com article. I get why the Picard face looks cheap. It’s a pop out image. http://www.startrek.com/article/tng-blu-ray-bonanza-coming-in-april

  • Gregg St Gregg

There’s a trailer for BOBW blu-ray on Amazon.co.uk, just click on the video below the image product : http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00B5A1VY8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

    • archer923

That was a really good trailer. CBS-D has really improved on making the trailers. Well that confirms they kept the misaligned phaser goof in. I don’t get why they fix some goofs. But recreate others. Should be a bit more consistent. CBS-D also fixed the color and star field issues from the reused Q-Who tractor beam shot. And added in the missing reflections during the first part admiral view-screen shots in the briefing room.

      • Quinn

Check out the added glow when the Borg cube gets destroyed!

        • archer923

They changed the entire borg cube destruction. And added CGI borg when Locutus is looking at the 3D viewscreen Mainly because the background was a reuse of the Q Who matte painting. Not really sure how I feel about it.

One way it’s better. Other way I wanted the model explosion. I wonder if they’ll do the same thing with the ENT D in cause and effect. I hope we get to see the model explosion like we did with the borg matte painting.

          • $38633853

Personally, I think that would’ve looked too fake in HD, but they only use CG for shots they can’t use… due to missing footage… they’re not using CG on a whim, but rather for shots where 1 or more elements can’t be found…

I hope an HD version of this trailer comes out soon, so it’s easier to see the detail and quality…

          • archer923

I have a feeling the model explosion shot was replaced like the Q Who matte painting. There was a lot of issues with that one. Plastic kitbash parts visible and wiggled. The background cloth showed up when it blew. It was probably too poor looking to use.

I mean, I could be wrong and the footage was just lost.

          • $38633853

Yea, plus the explosion didn’t look like the rest of the explosions we’ve seen through TNG until then… the explosions were mostly gaseous, whereas the Borg cube it wasn’t…

          • archer923

I think they where trying for it to slowly blow up. But the charges didn’t go off right.

          • $38633853

Yea, they must’ve not filmed it at a fast enough frame rate…

            I don’t think this:
            http://tng.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/s4/4×01/bestofbothworldstwo692.jpg

            Would’ve looked spectacular in HD…

          • archer923

Yeah, not really. The Kitbash tree parts really give it away in the explosion.

  • Matt Littledyke

Amazon have now seen the light and dropped the price to £52.49

  • At this point the prices are good enough to buy both at once in my country, Australia.
$54 for S3 and $15 for BOBW. Considering I paid $70 for S1 when it was released here last year I figure that’s not terrible.
