  • M. Wright

Looking pretty darn good! Much better than Season 2!

  • Matt_Cardiff_UK

Don’t think much of the shot at 03:30 – is that the ‘orrible 2 footer again?

    • M. Wright

That’s the 4 footer, it has all the extra bumpy details and thicker saucer (to better account for 10 forward).

The 2 footer has less detail, not more.

      • Chris2027

In fact, Andrew Probert sketched out Ten Forward intentionally as 1 deck and since they made the outer rim 2 decks high, he say’s the 4 foot model, having 2 decks on the rim make the Enterprise seem larger than she really is…

        http://ottens.co.uk/forgottentrek/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/Andrew-Probert-Ten-Forward-alternative.jpg

        • archer9234

I hate when people bring this photo up. yes, his intention was to have it a single deck. But the moment the sets where built. That was all voided. Since we know how big a person is to a window. They had no choice but to make decks 9 and 10.

    • Chris2027

      3:30?

      • M. Wright

I assumed he meant 0:30, since that’s the only kind of odd looking shot, it’s from Half a Life.
        http://tng.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/s4/4×22/halfalife062.jpg

        • Chris2027

Remember, some shots may be unfinished, remember how different shots looked in the S3 trailer, then how they look now… the BOBW shots from the S3 trailer to the actual BOBW trailer .. I also imagine, once we can get the non-YouTube compressed version, the shots will also be a lot crisper…

          • archer9234

Yes. The saucer stretching shot seems unfinished. It was missing key energy tendrils above it.

          • Chris2027

Well, one has to remember that the SD versions tended to have oversaturated and blown out shots…

Something I just noticed, the 4 foot model doesn’t have all the nav lights the 6 foot model has, lol.

          • archer9234

That I noticed for years. But from the s4 shot of it at the beginning. The exhaust vents on the nacelles to the left. look like they broke the model.

          • Chris2027

What part of the nacelles do you mean? If it’s what I think you mean, it seems like it’s present on both nacelles… it’s present in “The Defector” the first episode the 4 footer appeared in… but it does seemed popped out in that first shot of the trailer…

          • archer9234

That’s what I’m talking about. That shot clearly shows it popped off some how. It doesn’t stick out that far.

          • Chris2027
          • archer9234

Odd. In some shots it’s look flat. In others, it has all the extra stuff. And it’s not cause it’s switching between 6 foot model. I wonder what causes that.

          • Chris2027

Well, the 4 foot model has a lot of raised detail on it… some might not even be resolved by the new transfers…

          • archer9234

That really sucks for the model makers. We still can’t see all the details at certain angles.

          • Chris2027

Well, I never really did care about the overzealous raised detail they put on the 4 foot model… The Enterprise always had a smooth hull…

          • hypnotoad72

            Hurry up blu-ray! **DROOL**

          • Chris2027

            lol

        • http://www.facebook.com/MatRowe Mat Rowe

Yeah I noticed that straight away. The color seems off, like the hull is suddenly a reddy-tan rather than gray. But looking at this shot in SD it seems accurate to the original. I haven’t seen this episode in a while so I don’t know if the lighting is meant to reflect this reddy-tan color from an external source, but it doesn’t seem right to me.

        • hypnotoad72

I saw “Half a Life” last night – great plot material and the Enterprise was in front of a red star, hence the reddish color cast. CBS-D might have gone the extra mile, but even the generic color cast in the upcoming version is quite satisfactory. :)

  • rockiesfan_303

Any guesses as to which episodes will appear theatrically? I am praying for REDEMPTION!

  • James

Wow, this trailer sure was goofy. I like it :D

    • hypnotoad72

Ditto. I didn’t expect it to remind me of “The Golden Girls” with the silly family references and all, yet it still hits the spot…

  • Xavier

Much better than season 2! In fact, I did not notice a difference from CBS’s own season 1 and 3. Good job!
I hate the 4 foot model. She is ugly. The 6 foot model is a true beauty… well now ugly in HD… Awwww…..

    • Chris2027

I think the remastering makes the 4 foot model look amazing… even more so of the 6 foot model…

    • hypnotoad72

The 4′ model has grown on me a lot… the 6′ model is graceful, yet the 4′ model has more bulk and feels more substantial… I know the raised facade for the hull plates would be more visible, but it’s not as tacky as I’d thought…

Only 2:04 and 2:07 worry me with color timing (blues now look gray-white) but that’s probably due to a number of issues and if I looked at the SD set for those episodes, they’d probably look the same. At least for 2:04, but then the color restoration would more likely make it look greenish…

I’m amazed they found most or all of the crucial film elements; for ‘dated model work’ the bit with the Enterprise hull being stretched at 2:07 looks FANTASTIC (obvious MPEG compression issue aside, which has nothing to do with the restoration…)

      • Chris2027

The sun shot at 2:04, here’s the original SD version:
        http://tng.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/s4/4×09/finalmission217.jpg

The original SD shot from “The Nth Degree:”
        http://tng.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/s4/4×19/thenthdegree249.jpg

Yea, once we can get the trailer source file, which is probably in MKV format, the quality will be drastically better as it always is.

Andrew Probert (who designed the 6 foot model) doesn’t like the 4 foot model, him and I’ve talked about it, he says the reason was that the 6 foot model was “too smooth” for Legatos taste… Andrew said something along the lines of, “of course, the Enterprise has always been smooth.” In fact, Andrew wanted the bussards to have the same tan-orange color as the TOS Enterprise, he thinks the cherry red color looks silly.

        • Matt_Cardiff_UK

The sun shot from Final Mission looked great in SD – even in compressed HD it looks spine-tingling good. Final Mission was an epic episode I think – lots and lots of different, cool effects (the scene with the shuttle spinning around after the engine gives out and seeing the plant and moons whizz past the viewscreen over and over is awesome) and two very different story threads. S4 is my favourite :-)

        • hypnotoad72

THANKS!! My worries on color timing are pretty much excised…

          :)

I did rewatch “Nth Degree” last night after posting – awesome episode and the color timing shown in the new trailer looks identical. So methinks season 4 is going to be a solid release…

        • archer9234

I’m happy they corrected the tractor beam position. I don’t get why they forget the rear emitter is on the bottom. Not to torpedo launcher.

    • Matt_Cardiff_UK

The deflector dish is squashed compared to the 6-foot model’s dish.

      • archer9234

Not really squished. Everything was made fatter.

        • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I don’t like the fatter ship then – the whole thing is ‘squished’. The 6′ model was so epic, Paramount re-fitted it for Generations.

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

for comparison…4ft first…I don’t like the raised detail either….ahhh dammit I’m bagging on it again! lol

          • New Horizon

Yeah, they really ruined the look of the ship with the 4ft model. The lines of the 6ft were so lovely.

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

Check this out! Awesome top down view of the three models….

            http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/USS_Enterprise_(NCC-1701-D)?file=Enterprised_miniatures.jpg

          • Chris2027

In fact, the remastered version of the 4 foot model shot looks magnitudes better… I do think the remastering adds elegance to the 4 foot model, even though it’s not as elegant as the 6 foot model…

            https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-frc1/554593_518888834838054_1140827184_n.jpg

          • Xavier

What a little adjustment in illumination can make, ey? ;)
Nevertheless, the 6 foot model looks almost organic. I like the fact that ILM went back to it for GENERATIONS. The 4 foot model always looked just too much like a toy for me.

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I was thinking the same thing. See – now in HD remastered mode – that model doesn’t look half bad I guess.

          • archer9234

The remastering adds the realism the original composite shots lost. Since they where just throwing the stuff together with low res screens. And probably bad deadlines.

          • Chris09510

Plus, with the transfer technology of the time.

          • archer9234

The 4ft complaining keeps on going…

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

            I know – I’m sorry :-(

  • hypnotoad72

“Star Trek: The Golden Girls Generation”…

Just kidding. (Any Golden Girls fan knows they had family and family problems all the time, but with sex jokes that must have inspired Seth MacFarlane… any TNG fan knows that, post-BOBW, that episodes going through the emotional wringer would be insta-hits… though in reality, most of them are dreary and dull, feeling like mini-BOBWs where a major character is given a treatment that robs them of something, with “Remember Me” being the most obvious example and yet the first handful of season 4 eps are still very watchable…)

Anyhoo, the promo uses too much compression (which reminds me why I do not do streaming video), but – dang – the model work shown for the various episodes looks FAR better than season 2′s “remastering”, which is a GREAT sign… especially after the first 8 episodes or so (starting with “Legacy”), season 4 improved by leaps and bounds… until they sacked Ron Jones, of course…

Looking forward to July as well as next week!!

  • Ric

The transporter beams aren’t blue enough. Only s2 got this right…

  • archer9234

The trailer is pretty basic. But Not much went on in s4 that was really epic. So I get why they went more in the comedy area. The effect shots are actually good like S3. The new guys seem to have that quality there.

    • Chris2027

I thought the trailer was epic… especially the music, at least at the beginning…

I personally thought there were a lot of good episodes in Season 4, “Remember Me,” “Future Imperfect,” “Clues,” “Galaxy’s Child,” “Night Terrors,” “The Nth Degree,” “The Drumhead,” “The Mind’s Eye,” and “In Theory.” I’ve never seen “Redemption” but seeing it in this trailer, makes me want to see it.

    • SpaceCadet

Hello! BOBW2 was pretty epic and that was in season 4! I would say Reunion was an epic and classic episode to. Duras dies. K’Elar dies. K’Mpec dies. Alexander is introduced. Gowron is introduced. The new Klingon battle cruiser is introduced. Duras and Worf battle. Seems pretty epic to me.

      • archer9234

To me all that wasn’t. It was all regular episodes :P BOBW is spoiled cause of the separate release.

        • Matt_Cardiff_UK

As Eric Idle would say – ‘Cheer up ya miserable bugger!’ Come on! S4 is just amazing

Family is the only episode I know of in TNG to deal with the fallout from a previous story. Brothers is amazing – we get to see ‘Blue Alert’ for the first time and Data goes nuts.

Galaxy’s Child was rehashed into Voyager’s Elogium. But the Enterprise ‘soured the milk’ first :-) Nth Degree – the episode that got me hooked on Trek. Just – frickin – amazing. Barclay goes mental and uses brain lasers to send the ship across the galaxy and meet a giant floating head How cool is that??? Remember Me – Crusher’s finest 44 minutes. Avoiding vortex after vortex and the return of the traveller. Final Mission – Awesome effect shots throughout. Wesley grows up and stops being annoying. Mind’s Eye – Geordi gets brain zapped by Romulans. Legacy – Ishara Yar – in that onesie….I can’t wait to see Ishara Yar in HD…in that onesie.

Okay – Night Terrors was pants – and Future Imperfect – and a few others. But surely the rest is pretty darn epic?

          • Flake

I think Night Terrors is good! WTF is wrong with it! :p
Future Imperfect is good too! Damnit Man! :)

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

:-) I remember an interview with (possibly) Jonathan Frakes saying the scenes where Troi is floating look ‘shitty’. Might not have been Frakes but the episode was considered poor by the TNG cast.

The only good bit of Future Imperfect was when Riker tells Picard to ‘Shut Up!’

  • Frequent Guest

If DS9 is remastered, should they still have the Mirror Klingon/Cardassian ships cloaking/decloaking? Or should they try to keep continuity with The Emperor’s New Cloak?

I’ve got TOS-R in original production order, the first six movies, and then TNG-R Seasons 1-2 in production order (But with Symbosis before Skin Of Evil.). It would be cool if The Okudas would come up with the Stardates missing from episodes of TNG, DS9, and VOY so we can watch them in Stardate order.

    • Mike

I wonder if the next series will get a “sampler release” like TNG did.

    • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I don’t know – but the phasers coming out the torpedo launchers of the Klingon ships in Way of the Warrior need to be fixed!

  • http://twitter.com/joncockroft Jon Cockroft

    Looks great.

Nitpick – In the shot at 0.09 where the Enterprise spins round and the light catches the word “NCC-1701D” on the side of the nacelle it looks like it is a sticker on the model (which it probably is).

But i’m really picking nits ;)

    • Matt_Cardiff_UK

Nice spot though – nit picking is good. Shows you care.

    • archer9234

Yeah. Decals do that a fair bit. In fact, its what caused the registry to vanish in the SD rear shots (BOBW’s part I). The beauty pass lights where so bright in the original composite. They had to fix it.

      • hypnotoad72

And, assuming it’s possible, the amount of time needed would be a LOT to match up… once blooming happens (overexposure of light in an area that wipes out detail in adjacent areas), it’s pretty much impossible to remove.

  • James

Looks fantastic – I love that motion control shot 10 seconds in when the big D swings around – makes her look large and weighty. It all looks so good :)

  • Mike

I would enjoy hearing audio commentary on “The Host” by the director and by Gates McFadden. While most Crusher episodes really downplayed Gates McFadden’s strengths as an actress, I feel like “The Host” is one of her best character episodes. It could have been so much greater had they really taken some risks with it, but I always felt like they watered it down to make sure the episode was family friendly.

  • Matt_Cardiff_UK

TrekCore – the updates you provide are bountiful and unique – your idea of ‘limited service’ is not posting anything at all for like what – a couple of hours!? Do you people ever sleep? Have you got Data on the staff?

  • JJRClassic88

“I am not less perfect than Lore!”

Brent Spiner should’ve won an award for that particular episode…

  • http://www.facebook.com/MatRowe Mat Rowe

Good to see they’ve properly removed the obvious suspension cables and harness from Troi in Night Terrors. Watched that a couple of days ago and hoped they would.

    http://tng.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/s4/4×17/nightterrors052.jpg

    • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I never saw them in the first place – comparison shot anyone please? :-)

      • Chris2027

Once I get the original video file, I plan to make a longer comparison video of various shots, including this one…

        • Matt_Cardiff_UK

          Thank you :-)

        • Marcus

Why would anyone even TALK to this Chris2027 dude, who openly advocates STEALING TNG and potentially depriving fans of future remastered Star Trek blu-ray projects by not paying for it / helping other people not pay for it.

His name is all over the TNG season 3 blu-ray Pirate Bay page, where he mentions “I’m downloading at less than 100kb/s but uploading at 500+kb/s…”

          What a thieving jerk!

          • Chris2027

I don’t and have never advocated stealing, I’m still going to buy TNG Season 3.

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I don’t think he’s stealing if he’s uploading TNG. If anything, it’s the people who download it afterwards are stealing it. I never use Pirate Bay or file sharing sites like it. I think that the money ploughed into Trek by fans for the VHS and DVD releases is more than enough to justify the remastering. But agree also that downloading it hurts the chances of seeing DS9-R..

          • Mike

How do you know he is all over Pirate Bay unless you go to the site?

          • Marcus

Apparently you’ve never heard of Google?

    • archer9234

Wire work is a lot easier now. They removed the wires holding up wes’ sofa in Naked Now.

  • James

Coming right after the gag reel at the screening last night, the tone of the trailer makes perfect sense :D

    • New Horizon

We didn’t get the trailer until the end of BOBW…it felt kind of off…

  • New Horizon

After having time to really look at the trailer for Season 4, it does appear that the most stunning work belongs to CBS-D, which is somewhat misleading since the majority of Season 4 will be Modern Videos work. I do hope to see more of what they can do.

What we can see of their work in the trailer looks far above HTV’s weak effort, however it’s still lacking a certain punch. Right now I would say Modern Video are hitting it about 90% of where CBS-D can hit it. If CBS-D are able to help modern video push their work to 95%, I think it would be indistinguishable.

    • Matt_Cardiff_UK

Didn’t I see in a Tweet from TrekCore that CBS are doing season’s 5, 6 and 7? Does this mean that the outsourcing has been abandoned after s4?

      • New Horizon

        That would be AWESOME!

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=15509436 Stefan Haynes

          It’s happening!

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

Is there an official post confirming this? And the reasons why?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=15509436 Stefan Haynes

    @Trekcore

When does the uncompressed trailer arrive? :D

    • trekcore

It’s up now, Stefan! Enjoy :)

      • Stefan Haynes

Awe gee! The evidence continues to mount that TrekCore is the best darn Trek site on the web. Thank you again and again for your tireless contributions to all that is Trek!

P.S. I’ll be buying S4 through TrekCore’s Amazon link, and I’ll get as many of my friends as possible to do the same. :)

        • trekcore

Thanks Stefan! The feedback means a lot!

And of course I’m very grateful for the support buying the sets through our Amazon links – every purchase helps the site!
