Last summer, we were as surprised as you to learn that the long-dormant STAR TREK ENCYCLOPEDIA would be returning in 2016 for the franchise’s fiftieth anniversary with a much needed update – and now we have our first look at the new design of the high-end publication.

Order the 2016 Star Trek: Encyclopedia today!

Here’s the press release for this new reference guide, courtesy of Visionary Trek:

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the classic show, a fully authorized revision of the popular reference companion: a two-volume encyclopedia featuring a completely new design, stunning new full-colour photographs and illustrations, and 300 pages of new entries, packaged in a specially designed and shrink-wrapped deluxe slipcase

When it debuted in 1966, the Star Trek series quickly became a pop culture phenomenon, inspiring six spin-off series and thirteen films—including Star Trek Beyond, opening July 22, 2016—as well as books, comics, games, toys, and more. One of the largest franchises of all time, Star Trek’s overall box office revenue totals more than $1.93 billion to date.

Since its initial publication twenty-five years ago, The Star Trek Encyclopedia has been the go-to source for everything related to the franchise’s canon. Packed with highly detailed information, including brief episode and film synopses, no other book has come close to offering the same wealth of insight into the Star Trek universe.

Now, The Star Trek Encyclopedia has been thoroughly revised and redesigned for a new generation of fans. This updated and expanded edition includes 300 more pages, information, photographs and illustrations, and offers exhaustively researched and detailed entries on the characters, ships, and events from the last fifteen years of Star Trek television shows and films, including Star Trek: Voyager seasons 4-7, Star Trek: Enterprise seasons 1-4, and Star Trek Nemesis.

It also features material detailing the recent big-screen films Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek: Into Darkness. Packaged in a stunning deluxe slipcase, this two-volume set is a must-have for every Star Trek fan’s library.

You can preorder this new collection using the links above ahead of the October release.

Very nice. Looking forward to buying it!

  • Locutus

I’m torn about purchasing this for a few reasons. First, the price at Amazon is almost $90 for pre-sale. Ouch! Second, with websites like Memory Alpha, the need for a physical book encyclopedia is less than when they published the original.
On the other hand, having a physical book is more fun to spend time with to randomly browsing.

    • grandadmiralbinks

90$ is not much, considering it’s a double hardcover, with photographs and being more than 1000 pages long.

      • Locutus

I see your point there. The original was one volume, trade paperback and not as long and glossy. I will admit that I spent many an hour flipping through the Encyclopedia as a kid. I’ll probably succumb to the purchase eventually.

        • grandadmiralbinks

I for one already have 😀

    • DaMac

Physical media (including books) is only going to get more expensive as it gets more niche. Joe Schmoe bargain hunter will go digital quickly when quality is acceptable, so the rest of us have to pay a bit more to justify print runs and whatnot. Already happening for niche movies on blu-ray and vinyl albums.

It’s worth it when it’s something I love like Trek.

      • Brian Thorn

I like my Kindle for reading novels, but for expensive, illustrated (photos, paintings, maps, etc.) nonfiction, a physical book is far superior.

  • grandadmiralbinks

I will buy this is it takes me more than 100 euros! Even if I’m a frequent guest as Memory Alpha, I’m a total sucker for physical book as I’m a bibliophile.

  • “Since it’s initial publication twenty-five years ago”

Um, “it’s” means “it is.” The possessive form is “its,” without an apostrophe. If the people who wrote the press release for the encyclopedia can’t get THAT right, it makes me wonder how accurate the content of the books will be…

    • David Rothman

Dude, chill out. I’m guessing the person who wrote the press release is not one of the authors of the book.

    • Hayde Christiansson

What a tool! Don’t bee that stereotypical guy in you’re moms basement.

    • Marty Hayden

Seriously? The “Uh, I found one minor error, thus the rest of the work must be suspect” argument is ridiculous. If you’re (as in ‘you are’) that dismissive of the final product, then don’t buy it. Geesh.

    • OphidianJaguar

Read this article, don’t be a jerk.

“According to a bunch of fancy linguists, people who are more sensitive to written typos and grammatical errors are indeed the kinds of Type A assholes everyone already suspects them to be.”

    • Cabo 5150

Ha ha, having worked in publishing for many years, I have to say, it’s(!) probably the industry you’re *most* likey to see errors of this nature!

      Particularly from PR departments!!

  • Captain Chekov

  • Zarm

Probably won’t have the money for it, but man, I’d love to have this.

    • OphidianJaguar

Just wait for the price drop, thats I what I do with books like this that will probably be close to $100. I waited for the new Doug Drexler Star Trek Ships of the Line poster book to drop to a reasonable affordable price.

  • M33

Thrilled! And please release an updated Chronology!

  • Markus McLaughlin

Where’s the Kindle version? Kindle Fire/Kindle Classic! 😀

    • Brian Thorn

With all those illustrations, it would kill your Kindle…

    • OphidianJaguar

Ugh. Granted I think news papers and magazines are a waste, have not purchase either in eons, in this sterile age of technology…I’ve got an iPad and laptop and smart phone, its still nice to have ink on paper, to flip though the pages, the smell of fresh print. Books like this are so worth it. Forget the kindle and go buy the book! 😀

    • Kris Langley

Books, young man, books. Thousands of them. If time wasn’t so important, I’d show you something. My library. Thousands of books.

And what would be the point?

This is where the law is. Not in that homogenized, pasteurized synthesizer. Do you want to know the law? The ancient concepts in their own language? Learn the intent of the men who wrote them, from Moses to the tribunal of Alpha III? Books.

  • AdmNaismith

My ’96 version with the Voyager appendix is getting a bit dog-eared. I’ve been saving my money since they announced this last summer.
I don’t go for a lot of ST merch in my life, but I have the recent Maps and Federation History w/ the Pedestal. All totally worth it.

  • DaMac

Definite purchase. Been getting more into movie/TV books lately and this looks great. Need to go back and get some of the better Trek art books too.

  • OphidianJaguar

YES! As much as I love Memory Alpha, I adore Star Trek reference books, and cartography books, and the art and movie books. I purchase every iteration of the chronology and encyclopedia and am looking forward to this two volume set!

    • grandadmiralbinks

      PURE WIN!

  • Mikey Makin

Let me just check that I’ve got this right. Its a reprint of the mid 90’s edition with all the additional information in a separate book?

    • Not quite – it’s all the original information plus all the updated data, but both books will contain half of the overall information. It’s not one book = old, one book = new.

  • matthewtreksmith

Good day just to ask with this new Encyclopedia It will not have the jj star trek in the new books

  • Ben

Kinda want this but I’m still just keeping up with all the 2016 bluray and documentary releases.

  • Fiery Little One

    This is overdue.

  • (Roc) Wayne Alford

I will wait til they add Beyond and Discovery

    • PJ

By which point something else will be getting produced. There is never a right time to buy something like this. If you want it, you’ve got to just bite the bullet and accept it’ll be instantly out of date the moment you’ve got it.

  • StuUK

But 20 minutes away from collecting my delivery from the parents! – Been looking forward to this!!
