I always found Masks intriguing not just for the idea of an alien probe transforming the Enterprise into a city, but the whole examination of a culture and seeing them through Data.

And a great opportunity for Brent, so late during the show’s 7-year run, to once again demonstrate what a terrific actor he is.

I would argue Brent was fantastic as Data, the subtleties of the performance, his turns as Lore and terrific comedic timing. However in this episode it felt like he was doing bad impersonations more so than acting.

    Best episode ever. Not.

I did love the idea of finding ancient super advanced technology inside the comet. But the way the rest of the episode played out was laughable.

Funny, I just watched this episode yesterday (going through the Blu Ray edition as I treadmill). At the core was a potentially good episode, but it was not executed very well. It felt very cheap.

  • Silly episode, yes, but it was one of my favorites as a kid!

Yeah I didn’t like this episode. I think it was one of the worst episodes of the series. The whole transforming the ship I really didn’t get. And although I love Brent Spiner as data normally, I thought he, and Patrick Stewart, were very hammy in this episode. And of course in the worse way, this was another “at the end of the episode within 30 minutes everything was back as it was on the ship”.
