After launching its crowdfunding campaign last weekWhat We Left Behind – producer Ira Behr’s documentary on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine – rapidly hit its initial $150,000 goal and has continued to shoot for the stars, passing a quarter-million dollars in contributions.

ds9-goals

Flying past that first $150k goal in less than 36 hours, the Indiegogo fundraiser has expanded with a series of “stretch goals,” targeting an expanded running time, new music, additional interviews, and an expanded feature with former DS9 writers Ron Moore, Robert Hewitt Wolfe, and more on a hypothetical “Season Eight” of Deep Space Nine.

As of this morning, the What We Left Behind campaign has topped $257,500 and still has 25 days left in its fundraising window to continue taking in fan contributions.

  • This is great. I love DS9 and really looking forward to this documentary. I hope they can get Avery on board.

I also hope that this goes in some way to proving to CBS that DS9 is worthy of having a BluRay release with visual updates and new features like they did with TNG.

    • Salvador Nogueira

My thoughts exactly. DS9 is proving it has a die-hard following, and CBS should take this into account when considering a HD remaster. It’s not just a question of selling BDs. People would be willing to pay upfront for this, and I bet trekkers would all sign up to CBS AA, if it meant getting a season a year of DS9 remastered.

      • Stuart Chapman

In the discussion section of the campaign page, it was confirmed that they are looking into the practicalities of using HD clips for the documentary!

        • Salvador Nogueira

          That would be AMAZING!

      • Fctiger

How much would it actually cost to remaster? I’m guessing a lot but MAYBE there could be a way to get crowdfunding source to help. Yeah I know it doesn’t really happen for studio productions but if there shows enough people willing to put in enough money for it, maybe CBS will come half way.

        • bbock

I’ve seen the estimate of TNG at about $70,000 per episode, so abut $125 Million for the series. Add more for DS9’s later seasons where they used a lot of CGI for ship shots. Maybe $150 million??

          • Fctiger

Wow! OK yeah I don’t think a fan campaign will raise all those funds. Then again if 2 million fans pitched in $10 that would work out but 2 million is still quite a bit. I imagine only a few thousand has devoted to this campaign.

        • Pedro Ferreira

I imagine they would come half way. CBS can’t keep an SD show on streaming forever. Not so much a question of if but more of when.

          • Fctiger

Well yes or no I guess. There are plenty of old shows that never gets this kind of treatment and still sold on DVDS or ran online. And there was a very long article a few weeks ago why it may not ever happen,

Of course hope thats all wrong and they do at some point but its clear not anytime soon at least.

          • Pedro Ferreira

The article that ran a couple of weeks ago was basically the guy behind it reiterating the same points, nothing new. If there’s the option of remastering the show and as the video tape masters start to become worse CBS will no doubt be looking for alternative to what’s already available. I just hope they do something while the majority of the cast are still alive to talk about the series.

          • Fctiger

Again its a nice thought but there seems to be zero movement on it so I don’t think the appetite is remoetely there. Add to the fact TNG blu rays didn’t sell as big from what I understand I don’t know if they are willing to try for DS9 or Voyager knowing they will sell less.

But sure hope to be wrong some day.

          • Pedro Ferreira

Oh yeah some day they will, just not at the moment. For the sake of the production and cast crew hopefully sooner rather than later.

      • pittrek

I don’t like DS9 that much, I started to like it after they came with the Dominion War, but I would immediately pre-order the Blu-ray set. I would probably buy it more than once (I have 3 different Blu-ray sets of TNG)

        • Fctiger

Wow three? A devoted fan for sure. 🙂

          • pittrek

The original UK releases, the German steelbooks and the UK full show release

    • Muzer

Hell, if they attempted to crowdfund it I bet they’d be pleasantly surprised.

    • Neonblue1701

That’s not going to happen because TNG had original negatives to go back to, DS9 and VOY only have VHS tapes, which as we all know has a significantly lower resolution than 1920×1080.

    • Michael

Avery is a very ill man, likes to drink heavily and has mental illness

      • pittrek

That’s not nice to say things like that without providing any sort of proof. Yes, he is “weird”, but that doesn’t mean he’s mentally ill.

        • M33

It is a fact he was given a DUI several years ago. I remember reading the article and it disappointed me greatly.
Then I saw his interviews. Woah. It was like listening to someone who had taken a few hits of acid (and let me tell you I do know what it is like to converse with people on it).
That aside, he is a powerhouse of an actor.

          • Pedro Ferreira

I’ve been interested in learning more about Avery and why he behaves how he does since I had a photo taken with him at Comic Con. He wound me up but was very nice to me afterwards. We both felt embarrassed obviously.

  • Harry Kane

U see, we want prime trek and prime trek is what we used to see until that shitty 2009 movie and onwards

    • Your Worst Nightmare

I love DS9. I donated to this documentary. I have also found the Kelvin films entertaining.

I don’t care if we get Prime Trek.
I don’t care if we get Kelvin Trek.
I want good Trek that I find entertaining.

I respect that people don’t love the Kelvin movies. There is quite a bit of Trek I don’t like. It doesn’t mean that either of us are less of a Star Trek fan. It means that there’s enough out there for different people to like different aspects of Star Trek.

      • M33

        IDIC, my brother. IDIC.

        • Your Worst Nightmare

          We reach. 🙂

          • pittrek

So say we all. Sorry, wrong franchise

      • Fctiger

I agree. I wish more people thought like this. I get so sick of these silly batltes over which Star Trek is better than the other guys. STFU people its ALL Star Trek. We have 700+ hours of an incredible franchise that expands 50 years, 5 shows, 13 films and 6 crews with a lot of writers, producers, crew and actors who worked their ass off to bring it to us. There is much in there for ANY fan to enjoy at this point. And luckily we are getting more of it in a few more months. Count your blessings, Star Trek is still beating and be thankful for that.

        • pittrek

5 shows? In the case you don’t count the animated series, you shouldn’t say that it’s “ALL” Star Trek 🙂

          • Fctiger

I though TAS wasn’t actually canon? I only meant in those terms but sure of course the show should be included if it is. And obviously you can still like the show either way.

    • Bifash

I imagine even if you get “Prime Trek” you’ll find something to grumble about.

      • Dan d

so we shouldn’t care and hold no standards about anything
because whatever it is, its not gonna be good enough, so might just as well pretend its good and be happy with it, and magically, it will be good as it is

        legit thinking right here
if humanity’s fate would have rested on cretins like you we’d still be in the dark ages because whats the point of admitting something might be shitty, right?
        RIGHT, PEASANTS?

        • Ghost Robot Venture

Because the canon status of a TV franchise is completely comparable to the fate of humanity. Nice melodrama there.

          • Dan d

            fuck humanity, you included

Star Trek is much more important to me

          • Fctiger

Yeah you’re showing your ‘humanity’ right here its certainly not anything close to Star Trek vein.

          • Dan d

mayhaps I’m with the terran empire faggotiger
the fuck you know bout humanity fucktard? read a history book ffs

          • Fctiger

You have some serious anger issues. Sadly there isn’t an ignore button here. Safe to say you would be on most people’s here.

          • Dan d

there is an ignore function you cretin
            its called stfu
antagonizing me further won’t work, so I have to guess you kinda like being trashed, then again…. you are pretty fucking stupid to begin with…. so I won’t hold it against you if you can’t figure it out

          • Fctiger

You’re antagonized enough. Way too much over a board that is discussing a fund raiser for a documentary. Your anger issues aside, you haven’t contributed to the discussion in any meaningful way besides insulting people.

          • Dan d

if its irrelevant, why the fuck would you worry about contributing anything?

also, insults are not really insults if they’re factually correct
for example, you keep coming back for more, even if you stated that you would either ignore me if you could, which you didn’t, and I suggested a further possibility, which you didn’t take
what does this kind of contradictory behavior prove? that you’re fucking dumb? spot on your retarded majesty, here’s your scepter and crown….
and, posing as an amateur psychologist over my supposed “anger issues…. phleeez, don’t quit your day job over this, if you have one…. cause I highly suspect you’re on permanent disability one step away from drooling imbecile

          • Fctiger

Get some real help man. If you’re this angry and belligerent in real life as you have been on these boards, wow. Not sure how anyone can stand to be near you for more than ten minutes. This is a rant of an angry teenager.

          • Dan d

you act like someone threatened your physical well-being or something
you keep on blubbering the same false premise that you know who you’re dealing with, a “supposed” angry person, and it’s all just to avoid the truth
and the truth is, as I have factually proven, that you’re dumb, just fucking dumb
now why would I be angry at a damn retard? would there be something more useless than that?

and then you create more false premises, how do you know how long can people stand to be near me? are you some kind of sage too besides a failed internet psychiatrist?
lol, of course you are, poor little dum-dum, you can be anything you want…. right?
is that what your mum told you?
see? I can be a fucking internet psychiatrist too. It’s not some great achievement. But please do stick around…. you might learn some stuff.

          • Dan d: Please refrain from insulting other users – this is now our second request.

          • Dan d

And I request that you cease being a fag about it and ban if you so desire.
Its not my fault stupid retards have infiltrated your “users”. I’m not gonna censor myself in front of you as I’m not your mum.

        • Your Worst Nightmare

Not only are you being a wee bit melodramatic, it’s really not particularly fair for one small group of fans to suggest what is real quality Star Trek. Hate to break it to you but there are 726 episodes and 13 movies. I would be shocked if there was one adventure that someone didn’t find enjoyment out of. That’s the beauty of us having different opinions. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

My favorite series is TOS with DS9 coming in second. TNG and ENT are fairy middle of the road and I’m really just not a fan of VOY. I also think that TWOK is, while enjoyable, terribly overrated. My favorites from the films are TMP and ST09. Do I think that everyone agrees with me? Heck no. But it’s my opinion. I may find quality in something you dislike and vice versa. And that should be okay!

          • Dan d

did you count us or some shit?
count my balls while you’re at it, might find some enjoyment in it

          • Your Worst Nightmare

Did I count you? What are you talking about? What I’m suggesting is that no one has the right to dictate what another fan can or cannot like. I don’t dictate that you can’t hate Discovery without any real knowledge. I would take you more seriously if you actually gave it an actual chance. But Star Trek fans have a history of whining about things before they actually know anything real about it… so kudos to you for perpetuating a stereotype!

          • Dan d

            “Did I count you?”
            read what you wrote lol
“it’s really not particularly fair for one small group of fans to suggest what is real quality Star Trek”
            Well, did you?
we wouldn’t be having this silly crap disagreement if some Hollywood fucktards would have made a new movie with a new Trek story instead of a reboot that kills the entire prime universe on the side just because it can, and yes we’re talking the whole thing from TOS to Enterprise included
but their lack of creativity coupled with the “and fuck you too attitude” combined with MILLIONS of fucktards like you means they get to tell us it’s all been a lie and now this is Trek and this is what we get
well fuck it…. I won’t pay for it and I won’t give it any chance at all, you do that, you’re free to exercise your will and so am I

          • Your Worst Nightmare

I have no problem with the decisions they’ve made. I *HATED* Insurrection. I *HATED* Nemesis. I *HATED* Voyager. Enterprise was average on a good day. I found myself having fun with the Kelvin movies. No, they’re not perfect. But they were far better than what we were getting.

I’m not saying I’ll love Discovery but at least I’ll give it a chance. Just like I have with every Star Trek.

It’s your choice to be entitled. So be it.

And no, of course I didn’t count everyone. But the fact that the new Star Trek movies have done far better in the box office proves that you’re in the vocal minority. Of course, you probably don’t want to hear that. Again, I respect that you don’t like the direction that they’ve gone. But do you need to result to calling me a fucktard because of what I like and don’t? We really have lost the ability to have intelligent discourse without reverting to calling each other names.

          • Dan d

they’ve done better in the box office because they are aimed at imbeciles, that’s why
if a thing is popular…. it doesn’t mean its good, it just means the cretins like it
thats why you don’t find crowds in libraries, you find them at Bieber concerts

          • Your Worst Nightmare

Point of clarification: I said I enjoyed them but they aren’t perfect.

But here’s the thing… you can have your little movie that is “good.” But if no one goes to see it, then why would a company get behind it? At the end of the day, the goal of any corporation is to make money. And I hate to break it to you, but they’re never going to make an officially-sanctioned independent Trek movie.

So you go ahead, keep having a panic attack over the Kelvin films and Discovery. I’m going to go enjoy my life. Because I have better things to do than to argue with people who are so rude and thick-headed that they have to continually insult someone who’s trying to have a reasonable conversation with them.

        • Bifash

          JOG ON.

          • Dan d

            sod off

          • Okay, cool it.

          • M33

            LOL
            Oh, man.
That was a very strange conversation to follow.

      • Harry Kane

        Depends how good it is

  • Ian Fleming

As someone who loves DS9 as much as (if not more than) life itself this continues to be awesome news. Well done to all concerned. You just have to wonder what we could have at that $500,000 goal. C’mon folks. The game must continue!

  • iMike

This is awesome news!!! The more money they raise the more polished this documentary will be. I can’t wait!!!

  • Eric

The way they’re going, they might have enough to actually produce an 8th season (wish, wish, wish).

  • grandadmiralbinks

This just proves how beloved DS9 really is and that, at it’s core, has the most devoted and hardcore fanbase. It may have been “the black sheep” once, but it’s certainly no more.

  • Bifash

But for the missing ear, the Avery Brooks double makes a very good Sisko!

  • Michael Broadhead

I wonder if Netflix to pick it up? They could invest the extra needed and give it more exposure.

  • Michael

It’s sad that there is a fake sisko in the image because Avery Brooks is a drunk with massive “issues.”

Wormhole aliens – not even once.

    • FrostUK

Getting a DUI one time in your life doesn’t make you a drunk.

  • Michael

This is what happens when Kai’s and Vedek’s “feel the pagh” a little too much…

  • Michael

$1,000,000 stretch goal- we wheel in Avery Brooks after sobering him up and spiking him with medical weed

    • Robert Anthony

You seem to take a lot of joy in Avery’s pain. Not classy.

  • Wes

It’s at almost $300K… and they only asked for $150K… I agree with Hana… DS9 is more popular now than back in the 90s.

    Let’s keep it going Niners!

  • Ian Fleming

I went for the Freedom Fighter bundle. Best $80 I’m ever likely to spend. C’mon folks, let’s get it to $300,000.

    • iMike

Just $294K now … I think we can get this to $425,000.

  • prometheus59650

    Forum issues? (2.15)

  • Fctiger

I have a question but for the section in the documentary where the wrirers try to envision a season 8 is suppose to be the next year after season 7 happened or is it season 8 for the present and 20 years later? I would actually love to see them break season 8 20 years later….it will probably we get the closes to what is going on in the alpha quadrant after Nemesis. 😉

  • Chris

As a huge star trek fan I remember watching ds9 from the beginning I was already a big tos and TNG fan and acutely remember that this show was on a totally other level it had the best acting, stories and visual presentation to me like tos it had the feel of the final frontiers I am currently watching enterprise which I’m afraid to say I have not seen completely and whilst not bad suffers from the feeling of IV seen this before discovery must feel very different to succeed . I’m almost certain had not voyager and enter came along and ds9 aired slightly later after TNG it would have been more widely acknowledged with feature films
