Our Star Trek: Discovery Comic-Con coverage isn’t over yet! This time we’ve got a brief interview with the youngest member of the USS Discovery’s crew, Starfleet cadet Sylvia Tilly, played by Mary Wiseman.

TrekCore contributor Sam Darragh of the Trekkie Girls was our roving reporter at yesterday’s press junket, and she caught up with Wiseman just for a moment at the end of the press session to see what we could find out about this Starfleet hopeful!

TREKCORE: Could you tell us something about Cadet Tilly? We barely know anything about her so far!

WISEMAN: Cadet Tilly is a fourth-year cadet at Starfleet Academy, and she’s working on the DISCOVERY. She ends up being roomates with Michael [Burnham] and Michael becomes kind of a mentor to her, and a very unlikely friendship ensues.

She works in engineering, with Lieutenant Stamets (Anthony Rapp)… and she’s a cool girl!

Sylvia Tilly (Wiseman) worries about Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) sharing a bunk space.

We got our first on-screen glimpse of Tilly a shuttle wearing hazard gear, along with (as she describes above) her time with roommate Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) soon after her arrival on the Discovery.

Our Star Trek: Discovery content continues tomorrow!

Does anyone remember when this site used to be about not Discovery?

    • The Science Fiction Oracle

Just looked at your Disqus post record. Every single post you have ever make on Trekcore is on Discovery. You have never made a single post on other Star Trek shows/movies articles covered by Trekcore. For example, in the last week, you did not provide a single post on Trekcore’s Enterprise C or WOK articles, yet you have been posting on mutliple DSC articles in the same timeframe?

Obviously Trekcore is serving you what you want for dinner, my friend. 😉

      • M33

SFO, do you have a website or is you handle simply a handle?

I ask because you had in archive it seemed a lengthy analysis of the changes to the Klingons and I thought you might have others, possibly on other non-Trek sci-fi shows.

        • The Science Fiction Oracle

No web site, but I watch and read tons of scifi and attend Worldcons and such, and know some leading hard sf authors.

          • M33

No blog? Where do you report you assessments?

          • The Science Fiction Oracle

            Just wherever I am posting.

You are right though — I should do a blog. thanks

          • James

A WordPress one is easy to set up. I used to have one, but life interfered!

          • The Science Fiction Oracle

I may check into it. Thanks!

          • Dan King

Please cover Discovery. I am sure cBS would pay for the propaganda you would write. :p

          • Dan King

Need talent to have a blog.

          • The Science Fiction Oracle

            Were we talking to you?

          • James

There’s an exception to every rule!
            https://ryesofthegeek.wordpress.com

          • The Science Fiction Oracle

            LOL – yes!!!

        • Pedro Ferreira

Like all oracles nobody listens to them until it’s too late…apart from this guy obviously. Ha, ha!

          • The Science Fiction Oracle

You don’t have that issue, because all of your posts are only one sentence long. Ha! ha!

          • Pedro Ferreira

Will take that criticism on board. Thanks!

          • The Science Fiction Oracle

            Peace!

    • TUP

Such as? Movies that arent being made? Series that are long gone? What do you want them to cover if not the friggen series currently in production and about to launch?

Geeeze I dig the gimmick accounts where the trolls whine about really insignificant and irrelevant things to take silly shots at Discovery, but you guys arent even trying anymore. Far too transparent.

    • Pedro Ferreira

To be fair they have posted gallery pictures for all the movies. That’s cool.

      • And more big gallery updates on the way!

        • Pedro Ferreira

Thanks! Do you have any for video games like Star Trek Borg? I’d love to see some behind the scenes pictures from the making and filming of that game.

  • Dan King

    Lesbian relationship confirmed!

    • The Science Fiction Oracle

LOL. Well, that would be a ratings booster for sure.

      • Dan King

They said it would be a more mature show and that they are not limited by broadcast norms since its streaming.

Fuller wanted to push diversity and homosexuality in this show which is fine, so I expect a lot of gay sex on Discovery. Which is fine. We need an updated version of the decon chamber, and put this Irish lass and Nubian princesss in there…

        😍

        • M33

Ugh… please no more decon-like scenes.
Had to be the worst of Trek ever.
Will be very dismayed if they think we want to watch Trek of Thrones.

          • Dan King

Show is supposed to be “gritty” like GoT

    • TUP

      Source for the confirmation?

Oh you mean you’re being your usual sarcastic and smarmy self. Okay. I bet a lesbian relationship would bother you too, wouldnt it?

      • Dan King

Source? They need to pop the railings because of the negative fan backlash

  • Dan King

Why is the mycologist working in engineerig? The dude is the expert in mushrooms, not warp cores.
Perhaps they are using FUNGI POWER as a “new way to fly!!!”

    Lmao

    • Eric

I just posted a similar question. The lesbian thing is silly, but you’ve got something here. Something not right is going on here. Burnham says it in the trailer.

      Intrigue, y’all, intrigue.

      • Dan King

Why is the lesbian thing “silly”
Are you anti-gay? It says they develop a “special relationship” and it is know Fuller wanted to push for more homosexual relationships on Star Trek.

        • Eric

It’s not silly because it’s LGBT; it’s silly becaues the tone with which you write reveals your sarcasm and perhaps bitterness. It feels like you like to carry a hot prong and poke people at every turn.

You clearly care about Trek as all of us do. Why not relax a bit and see what happens?

          • Dan King

I don’t understand how you hear audible sounds from screen text. I had no “tone”‘when I wrote my suggestion they are lesbian lovers.

      • The Science Fiction Oracle

Please see my post above. Dune and The Expanse are sf examples of not dissimilar bio tech for space technology.

        • Eric

Yes, thanks. It’s also in Voyager.

    • TUP

Why dont you wait to watch the show first?

  • Dan King

    They become lovers?

    a very unlikely friendship ensues.

  • Eric

    Ok y’all, here we go:

I learned this from the trekmovie.com video interview: Tilly is a cadet (in operation bronze) who works in engineering with Stamets who is a scientist who specializing in fungai. He isn’t an engineer. At some point Burnham walks into what looks like a cargo bay and looks a room filled with what looks like moving, living fungai. Lorca says they’ve found a new way to fly.

Ok. I’m wondering is there a similarity to VOY: Eqinox.

Either way, there is something “fungy” going on here!

    • Locutus

I was wondering about all those plants shown in the trailer. You’re on to something!

    • Pedro Ferreira

I’m sure Stamets is a ‘fun gai’.

    • Dan King

Hopefully this is incorrect. It is terrible writing if fungi is powering warp drive. It’s absurd and cheezy.

      • Eric

Dude, this is science fiction: they can easily science the s*^t out this and come up with an explanation. Happens in most episodes of TNG and VOY.

Dan, does every response have to be negative?

        • TUP

Yes every response from Dan has t be negative and inappropriate. He was warned by mods so he’s now sulking and looking to get himself turfed, unfortunately

          • Dan King

            Sulking? Lmao

        • Dan King

I just find it very silly. Mushroom powered warp drive.

          • The Science Fiction Oracle

Agreed. That would be on the level of instant downloads of alien minds and souls into human brains…oh, wait! 😉

    • The Science Fiction Oracle

Sounds a bit like the proto-molocules in The Expanse Season 1.

Also, the “spice” in Dune comes to mind.

  • Locutus

Since when do senior officers bunk with cadets? Even in Archer’s time, the senior officers had their own rooms. Maybe there’s some reason for it.

    • TUP

Could be as simple as this science vessel being re-assigned to a mission involving the Klingons and not having enough crew quarters for everyone. Could be the captain putting Michael in her place by making her share quarters with a cadet, a slight sign of disrespect. Could be Michael requesting a “lower decks” quarter assignment because she wants to be a woman of the people.

      • Locutus

Could also be that they got fungus growing everywhere and taking over crewman’s quarters, so they gotta double-up!

    • SpaceCadet

Michael was sprung from prison by Captain Lorca. At this point, I think it’s very possible that Michael hasn’t yet received her commission in Starfleet back and she’s merely an advisor.

      • Eric

Yes, I think you’re right. At this point in the story she is probably not yet the first officer again. The shot we see with Tilly, Burnham doesn’t have on a uniform.

        • Dan King

She is getting ready to get it on with her.

    • Pedro Ferreira

Because bunks are edgy and realistic man!

    • Dan King

She is lusting after the young cadet and demanded to be put in the same room as her.

      • Locutus

Repeating it won’t make it be true 😉

… not that I would mind if it came true!

        • Dan King

          Lol

  • Fiery Little One

For those wondering why Burnham is bunking with a cadet, based off of this site’s own supposition it’s likely along the lines of a cadet rooming with an ex-con that wants to reform. (As unlikely as that situation would be in real life.)

As for why she’s attached to the fungus guy, who is assigned to Engineering it seems, I don’t know and am not willing to speculate on.
