At Tuesday’s annual summer Television Critics Association press tour in Los Angeles, the Star Trek: Discovery cast and producing team spent time promoting the series and speaking about the soon-to-arrive new series with a variety of media reporters.

Much of their comments echo previous statements to reporters and the San Diego Comic-Con crowd last weekend, commenting on the revelation that Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is essentially the adopted daughter of Sarek (James Frain) and Amanda Grayson, that the Federation is mired in war with the Klingons during the time period in which Discovery is set, and that Bryan Fuller’s vision for the series – though not aligned entirely with his original hopes – is being honored by the remaining leadership team running the series.

Perhaps the biggest surprise for the press attendees was the reveal of the new Discovery theme song, composed by Jeff Russo and recorded for the series by a 60-piece live orchestra – which received wide praise from those in attendance:

Hopefully, the new music will be revealed to the rest of us soon!

As a final tie-in to the press presentation, CBS revealed a new, expanded series of Discovery promotional posters, giving each new cast member their time in the very-literal spotlight.

These posters are already on display here at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention, launching today and running through Sunday, August 6.

  • Locutus

Ahhh, what a tease! Reading the headline, I thought for sure I’d get to hear the new theme song already.

    • GIBBS v2

I scrolled up and down the page quickly looking for something resembling a player.

  • pittrek

And where’s the theme song? Or when will we able to hear it?

    • The Science Fiction Oracle

      Can’t find it anywhere???

    • It has not yet been released to the public.

  • archer923

At least they made a theme song. I was just expecting them to just have the logo with lens flares. Or “Hi my name is Micheal Burnham, and I’m the Flash…er first officer.” nonsense shows do now.

    • MattR

That’s one of the nice side benefits of Discovery being on a streaming site where they don’t have to fit within an hour with commercials. Because of the pressure to make more money, shows on traditional tv have cut out theme songs so that they can squeeze in more commercials. It’s a shame too since theme songs are one of the most memorable things for tv shows going back decades.

      • archer923

No it was because people didn’t want to see openings anymore. It was wasting their time. Or things like Flash’s monologue intro wouldn’t exist either.

        • MattR

Those are because shows have gotten so involved that they need those in order to allow casual viewers to not be completely lost. A “previously on” recap is more necessary than a generic main title. That’s why those change from episode to episode in terms of the actual monologue and the scenes they show..

          • archer923

Except Flash is the same one over and over again. It’s not for a recap.

          • MattR

It’s changed a number of times. There’s a least a different one every season, and this last season had at least two versions. It works as a general recap though since it’s setting up the current storyline/arc.

            For example: S3 started with:
“My name is Barry Allen. And I am the fastest man alive. To the outside world, I’m an ordinary forensic scientist. But secretly, with the help of my friends at S.T.A.R. Labs, I fight crime and find other metahumans like me. After defeating Zoom and saving the multiverse, I ran back in time and created the alternate timeline “Flashpoint”. I restored the timeline to how it was, only to find things weren’t as I left them. I brought new threats to our world, and I’m the only one fast enough to stop them. I am the Flash.”

And then towards the middle of S3 changed to:
“My name is Barry Allen. And I am the fastest man alive. To the outside world, I’m an ordinary forensic scientist. But secretly, with the help of my friends at S.T.A.R. Labs, I fight crime and find other metahumans like me. In an attempt to stop the evil speedster Savitar, I was accidentally thrust into the future, and I saw him murder the woman that I love. But I won’t let that happen. I’m gonna do everything in my power to change the future, and I’m the only one fast enough to keep her alive. I am the Flash.”

In any case, the opening monologue is still a general recap of the main storyline going on, with the “previously on” part more specific to what you need to remember for that particular episode.

        • DC Forever

Some openings with clever images and great music I still watch on every episode – GOT and Vikings come to mind.

        • Tom Cruise Never Phones It IN

I like long openings. Twin Peaks original opening, for example. is a good short film.

  • M33

From what was reported elsewhere, the theme music is thankfully lyrics-free!

kinda grew on me in a ‘cheesy’ sorta way though, but i get what you mean lol

          • Gene

Yep it worked because star trek in itself is inherently cheesy. Good but cheesy.

        • Tom Cruise Never Phones It IN

          Rod Stewart knock off

          • Pedro Ferreira

            Actually a cover.

          • Tom Cruise Never Phones It IN

His singing style is Rod Stewart, that raspy style, the Full House and Family Matters theme guy has the same annoying style as well.

          • Pedro Ferreira

It’s Russell Watson doing the cover. Worth noting Faith of the Heart wasn’t the original song choice for Enterprise. It was another song they couldn’t get the rights to.

          • Tom Cruise Never Phones It IN

I’m aware, just commenting on the style of singing.

          • Pedro Ferreira

            Oh okay.

          • irrenmann

            What was the original choice?

          • Pedro Ferreira
      • Caitlin Ann

Right? The worst thing about enterprise was that theme.. ugh! It made me very attentive for the remote ffw

    • Locutus

I showed my signficant other an episode of Star Trek: Enterprise for the first (and only?) time a couple days ago, and the response to the theme song was appropriately, horror!

    • Pedro Ferreira

At least they did one thing right.

  • Karl

Star Trek: Titanic is nearly ready for it’s maiden voyage!

    • Rass

      That was stupid. Try again.

    • The Science Fiction Oracle

      Lame!

    • DC Forever

That’s called spam and you are trolling again; I am reporting this to Trekcore

      • TUP

Im surprised Karl is even still here. Literally has offered not one single letter of worthy contribution. Time for a permanent vacation.

        • Your Worst Nightmare

I have no problem at all with differing opinions but I find it interesting how when Karl is called out, he disappears.

          • TUP

Maybe he finally earned himself a vacation from here.

    • M33

      Star Trek: Diversity was funnier.
Besides, Douglas Adams already claimed the use of a spaceship Titanic.

    • Tone

Exactly right, as if Discovery had done anything interesting, it would have been mentioned in a previous Trek series.

“We’re creating a new way to fly”… Well obviously you didn’t, or we would of heard of it, wouldn’t we…

Got to love the crazy positive types that post here. Say anything real or critical of their good cause of the week, and watch them pickup the torches and pitchforks.

    • Tom Cruise Never Phones It IN

      lol

    • Pedro Ferreira

I see what you did there (wink).

  • The Science Fiction Oracle

One error in their otherwise very cool dynamic poster — every character has blue eyes — I have a hard time believing that is the case?

    • Quintillion Tesla

I think they’re going for a blue/gold theme to the posters rather than it being an accurate representation. That being said, the super-nitpicker in me is slightly miffed that Sarek’s fringe isn’t cut shorter to match Mark Lenard’s interpretation, lol.

  • Quintillion Tesla

No doubt there will be some people who will come down on the DSC theme song like a ton of bricks – let’s remeber that TNG did not even have an original theme song and just re-used ( the brillaint ) TMP theme tune; DS9 had a theme akin to a mid-80s soap opera; ENT had the song which many fans hated ( it actually grew on me ).

Voyager alone had a wonderful theme tune – of course very Trek-Like seeing as it came from Jerry Goldsmith.

    • Your Worst Nightmare

Dennis McCarthy actually wrote an original theme for TNG. It was used as Picard’s theme for the first two or three seasons of the series. I actually almost prefer it to what we got but I like the TMP theme too.

      https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=jzpeulsbv8o

      • Quintillion Tesla

Wow, I’ve never heard ( or rather noted ) this before. Hearing it so late makes it sound to my like one of those “copyright-free” knock-offs – so weird!

        • Your Worst Nightmare

Lol — I get that. It’s definitely official though was on the soundtrack I got in the early to mid 90s for Encounter at Farpoint from GNP Crescendo.

      • TUP

Sounds like something you’d hear in a Superman films form the 80s.

        • Pedro Ferreira

More like the 90s animated series. The John Williams Superman theme is classic.

      • SpaceCadet

I’ve heard this before. Sounds very Buck Rogers/original Battlestar Galactica!

        • Pedro Ferreira

No it sounds nothing like those shows.

          • SpaceCadet

            Yes it does.

          • Pedro Ferreira

No, this sounds generic. Battlestar Galactica has a grand majestic score, Buck Rogers has a pop song mixed with an orchestra. Really different.

      • Robert Anthony

This reminds me of the music for “Galaxy Quest”. I’m not a big fan of the TNG theme, but it’s far less campy than this.

      • Pedro Ferreira

Yeah , heard this before. Generic like the mid 90s Superman animated series theme.

    • Knightmoves64

The original DS9 theme with the slower tempo and sparse, brass-heavy orchestration was hauntingly beautiful. The new visuals in the season 4 version were an improvement, but the musical changes (i.e., the faster tempo and tambourine backing) were not.

  • Fiery Little One

Well, whenever they decide to release the song, I look forward to hearing it.

  • Martin Venema

No news here about the new character thats on one of the posters. A klingon named Voq. I’m curious about who is playing that character …. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/3500c98fc4609268d4ffc861ba4476275ae6c2a95d4f661b26f53d4cc5115edd.jpg

    • Quintillion Tesla

The pull of the lower eyelid reminds me of Vic Mignogna. But I guess it could just be an effect of the heavy make-up. Would love to see Vic show up in DSC ( even as Kirk! )

      • Locutus

I would totally accept Vic as the real Kirk! He is outstanding in Star Trek: Continues.

      • Vger64

Wow.. what a thought! That would be so cool. Glad to hear that some Trek fans are behind this DSC series. I am actually VERY disappointed in a lot Trek fans these days. Very disappointed.

  • Can not wait to hear the song!

  • Tone

    CBS sponsored click bait.

  • PhoenixForce

It’s almost time for this train wreck to roll out of the station. So they’ll try to get as many on the hype train as possible before it derails in September as a vapid insult to Gene’s vision it is.

    • mr joyce

so you’ve seen it then to know this?

      • PhoenixForce

Nope but I have followed it and anyone who has knows it’s troubles. I will even say I will watch it when it is available. However. Trek has had 15 years to move forward and it has done nothing but preseries and reboots. I’m tired of it, most of my friend who are also trekkers/ies are tired of it. We want to BOLDLY GO. Not BOLDY GO BACK.

        • Pedro Ferreira

Hollywood loves it’s prequels doesn’t it?

    • Tom Cruise Never Phones It IN

      lol yes

  • Vger64

I for one will wait for the show to come out before I call judgement day. I actually can’t wait to hear the theme!!

  • Susan Dietz

These are wonderful posters but they are the same color scheme as Game of Thrones Season 7 posters. Also, Kurtzman said they were sticking to canon since Discovery is 10 years before the original Trek. Michael Burnham is Sarek and Amanda’s foster daughter. That’s not canon. I know you will say well, Sybok, wasn’t either but, at least, we had Spock there to clear up the mystery. I’m guessing there will be some elaborate story about Spock rejecting her or never knowing her and, therefore, we wouldn’t know about her because his parents never told him. (That explanation will be as interesting as the new Klingons, I’m sure.) I can’t wait to hear the new theme. I like Jeff Russo’s work on other series.

    • Pedro Ferreira

Yeah because of course you want your sci-fi compared with GoT don’t you?

      • Susan Dietz

Trek is way different then GoT. One is sci-fi, one is fantasy and I love them both. It just seems like someone should’ve been paying more attention with the color scheme on the posters. Seems petty, I know, but if they don’t even notice that, what else didn’t they notice?

        • Pedro Ferreira

It’s pretty common for studios to jump on the bandwagon rather than do their own thing. Kind of sad really but then the producers said they are going for a GoT style storytelling which is sending alarm bells ringing, at least to me.

          • Susan Dietz

Very true about bandwagons. Seen it numerous times. Agree with your alarm bells. While I don’t mind a serialized storyline (loved DS9), unless you do as good a job as GoT has done with great actors and characters, then it becomes a tangled mess. Hopefully, our worries will be for naught.

          • Pedro Ferreira

They said they’re going for GoT storytelling that’s not a good sign. They also said not to get comfortable with the main cast as like GoT they’ll kill people off at any time. This makes it incredibly difficult to relate to any of the characters if we cannot see them as heroes. DS9 got the right mix of serialisation and episodic storytelling. More modern day shows need to learn from DS9 as well as TNG.

  • Tom Cruise Never Phones It IN

    More people shilling for this…thing.

  • Pedro Ferreira

If this has an intro longer than 20 seconds that will be the only good thing this show has done so here’s hoping it does at least that.
