STAR TREK: DISCOVERY Opening Title Sequence Revealed

We saw it at the Tuesday premiere in Hollywood, and we’re so happy that the rest of the world can now get a look at the stunning opening title sequence for Star Trek: Discovery!

Paired with the music of composer Jeff Russo, the new opening sequence — which will include actor and production credits when paired with Discovery episodes — is a lovely sequence which includes visuals of the USS Discovery, Starfleet gear, and Klingon weapons.

For those of you who can’t see the above video, here’s an Twitter version from the composer himself:

Tell us what you think in the comments below!

  • Your Worst Nightmare

It’s interesting. Very different. I’m not sure if I particularly like it overall though.

I do give it credit for being different in not being the typical Berman-era starship/station porn. I’m also hopeful it doesn’t have the rank/full name of the characters in the credits. We really don’t need that.

    • Quintillion Tesla

“it’s interesting. Very different. I’m not sure if I particularly like it overall though. I can see it growing on me though.”

Yes, it will take some getting used to, but I admire that it is in line with other modern shows rather than being stuck in the past or just a rehas of Trek openings we have seen before with the ship flying by various planets.

I do like it’s ( coincidental? ) realtionship to the ENT opening in a number of respects.

      • M33

I think ENT’s opening montage was better, though. More lively, more grounded, felt real.

This is certainly fine… better than TOS and TNGs for sure.

        • TUP

          Well Enterprise was real shots.

This is good though. Sort of concepts coming to life.

      • Your Worst Nightmare

Exactly right. Shows again that Trek is building on what came before but isn’t necessarily stuck in the past. It isn’t afraid to get into the year 2017.

  • Wow. Not what I expected at all but I love it. It feels like it carries on the visual style a little from the opening titles for Enterprise. This feels more like a James Bond opening. So nice. It’s probably one that they can also easily change with new illustrations for each season to match the story lines.

I noticed also that there were no cast names on this so I’m assuming they just get overlaid as the scenes start for each episode.

  • David Lund

Really like this! With such a cgi heavy show im really pleased they didn’t just have titles of ships and planets. The way this draws from centuries of science, natural history and engineering illustration really suits Star Trek. Beautiful, intelligent introduction – let’s hope the show matches!

    • Ed Lilli

I noticed the crystal-like bits flying by. I wonder if they come from fungi, a spore type of thing, which powers the ship.

  • Tom Cruise Never Phones It IN

So they filmed the concept art?

    • Brian Benton

Not that there is anything wrong with that.

    • STFU. YOUR CONSTANT SNIPING AND MOANING IS FKING BORING!

    • mr joyce

      derp?

    • Pedro Ferreira

Yeah that’s what I thought! Ha, ha!

  • Marcel Anke

    Ok, thats different and intresting.

  • Brian Benton

Very stylish and different. I like it.

  • The animation reminds me of a Bond opening, in a good way. I really like the mix of new and classic Trek music also.

    • SuburbanSteve

Have to agree with you when I first saw the opening it reminded me of the Daniel Craig bond movies, good call mate…

  • Lee O.

I think I like it… a lot! Kind of in with the whole “rebuilding Star Trek” idea.

  • Wow.
    I have no other words.

  • Quintillion Tesla

I wonder what significance – if any – the flying green crystals have in forming the DISCOVERY?

    • M33

      Lithium crystals, man.
      I’m telling you! 😆

      • Ed Lilli

I didn’t read far enough down. I thought the same thing. If they’re like a spore that makes the ship fly somehow.

    • Your Worst Nightmare

      The shrooms maybe?

  • M33

    Huh…

Don’t really know what to say.

It looks like this was designed for season one specifically, unless they are having the Klingons be part a major of the entire run.

    • Quintillion Tesla

Actually, I was thinking this could be a case where the titles are modified each season.

I was also wondering how the titles would look in negative ( so white moving animations against a black, space-like backdrop )?

      • M33

        THAT would be much cooler!

        • Quintillion Tesla

I wonder if there is a computer video program of some sort that can invert the colours?

          • Marcel Anke

it´s just a filter, no big work, in adobe premiere

          • Quintillion Tesla

I was also watching your one paired with a segment of the JJ/Giachinno music – very interesting!

      • Marcel Anke
        • Quintillion Tesla

That’s bloody brilliant! You did that so quick!

        • Brian Benton

Reminds me of the old style blueprints.

        • M33

          That looks SOOO much cooler!

        • Interesting, though it defeats the whole theme of the visuals, which seems to be schematics drawn on aged paper (in the vein of Leonardo Da Vinci).

  • iMike

Definitely not what I was expecting … and I’m very happy with what I just watched. Thanks for the sneak peek!

  • TUP

Takes some getting used to. But its pretty cool. They sure aren’t just doing the norm or the obvious. I ike the Da Vinci -ish drawings and as people have said, reminds them of a Bond opening.

I DO think the transition between classic and new music is a bit jarring but probably it will become more natural feeling over time. I definitely like the use of classic.

It could be that it speaks to the series.. Trek lore…plus new.

  • Eric

Very reminiscent of Game of Thrones and Westworld. A strong focus on the idea that space exploration is simultaneously a journey of the self.

    • Locutus

I agree. Although reminiscent of GoT and Westworld, it works pretty well. I particularly like the dashes of color! I still think the musical theme itself isn’t as remarkable as TOS, TNG, or DS9; however, the graphic design in the titles elevates it.

    • Pedro Ferreira

Oh good because we need it to look like GoT and Westworld don’t we?!

  • jonathanwthomas

Love it. Theme reminds me of Game of Thrones or Westworld.

    • Pedro Ferreira

Yeah because we need it to look like friggin GoT right?!

  • GhostLoveScore

This is terrible. Sorry. I am not a troll that hates everything about new series. I love some stuff, I hate some stuff. Personally this is terrible and boring.

    • Quintillion Tesla

Maybe it’ll grow on us. I remember thinking how lacklustre the DS9 theme was, and just accepted it later. Perhpas we’ll learn to live with this theme once we see the story?

That said, it would have been nice to get something as hummable as the GOT or WESTWORLD themes.

      • Gosh I love that theme music. Dramatic. Haunting. Thought it was a travesty when they jazzed it up in the later seasons.

      • GhostLoveScore

Honestly, I don’t see it growing on me. But really, opening titles are of no importance for the show. I would prefer if they has black screen with “Star Trek Discovery” for 2 seconds.

        • M33

          True.
          TOS’s opening music is grating.
          TNG’s bombastic opening gets tiresome.
DS9 was good, VOY was the best (though not the best show by a long shot)
ENT’s montage was great, but the theme music was so saccharine and schlarky and out of date already when it was used.

This theme is simple, possibly forgettable. Unoffensive. Pays homage to the TOS era.
          Good enough.
Thank GOD there are no vocals!

          • Pedro Ferreira

            No just no.

      • Pedro Ferreira

        Those themes aren’t hummable.

    • Tom Cruise Never Phones It IN

Yes, just copies currently popular credit style.

      • The Science Fiction Oracle

        lol k

      • Pedro Ferreira

        As in it’s crap.

  • Kevin

I noticed this runs the same length of time as Enterprise’s theme. I have an idea! 😛

  • CAPTAIN D-MAN

Reminds me of “Fringe” and “Elementary”.

  • Kevin

The only thing I’m not crazy about — this is the graphic designer in me — I was never too crazy about the font design. I know this has been used since the very beginning of the series promotion, but I had sort of hoped they were going to redesign it. But, that’s ok! The whole sequence is truly amazing — it would have been cool to see one similar to this for Enterprise.

  • Ian Fleming

Well, it’s been a long road… but I have faith that Star Trek: Discovery will be a keeper. Faith of the heeeeaaaaaarrrrrrrtttttttttttt!

  • Perplexum

    I can dig that.

  • Not what I exspected, but I love this

    • Pedro Ferreira

      Of course you do.

  • Thomas Elkins

I don’t like it. The music isn’t bad, but it’s not particularly memorable either. The title sequence feels off to me as well. Just a bunch of random props from the show splashed on the screen. People hated Enterprise’s opening, but honestly it was superior to this one, imo.

    • Ian Fleming

Out of context props. I’m curious as to why the phaser starts off as the TOS iteration but is then “deconstructed” and reformed into the DSC version. The communicator is also TOS and not the DSC one that was used in the promotional push back in the summer. Are we going to be seeing more familiar elements from TOS? Because, otherwise, why show it at all? I can’t wait to watch the show and find out.

      • M33

        Fits with their “revisionist” mission.
Making the old modern into new modern.

        • Pedro Ferreira

          That doesn’t make sense.

      • I hope not. Its just an updated look. We do not need to see sets and props renaking the 1960s

    • prometheus59650

      No one hated Enterprise’s opening.

      They hated the song.

      Difference.

      • Thomas Elkins

Even with “Faith of the Heart” it was better than this.

        • October_1985

At least it had a melody and was hummable.

        • M33

For me, “Faith of the Heart” was a sloppy seconds no-go from the beginning.

    • People hated the theme, not really the images

    • The Science Fiction Oracle

      WTF?

    • Pedro Ferreira

Yeah I get that impression as well.

  • Trent

Don”t care for them ,ship is still damm ugly!
Came across this ,this is cool! ugly ass ship ,but this is cool!!!
    https://youtu.be/ufvGlbHqtbw

    • I’m kinda shocked how ugly it is

    • Pedro Ferreira

Not enough brown and lens flare.

  • M33

I hope that ship design grows on me…

  • mulk2001

So this is what a fringe/star trek opening would be.

  • Pretty cool. The visuals are unique, doesn’t remind me of other show’s opening titles. I like the theme music, though I already knew that. Has a grand, epic feel to it, though it’s definitely a bit less hummable than previous themes. It will take me a while until I can properly rank it, have to let it settle in.

    • The Science Fiction Oracle

Agreed. Like Williams soundtrack for TFA — less hummable and grandiose, but works seamlessly with the characters and the emotions on-screen.

      • Pedro Ferreira

The soundtrack for TFA was so good I actually don’t remember any of it.

  • Love the titles, I especially love how there’s hints at TOS. The phaser goes from the TOS design and deconstructs into the DSC one. I just wish that flyby at the end was at the beginning, it seems odd it’s shoehorned at the end. Overall great job by Prologue, run by Kyle Cooper, who gained notoriety for doing the Seven titles, and has since designed the 3D computer read outs for Iron Man and titles for all of the seasons of American Horror Story.

    • Did they also do the screens on Discovery’s bridge? Or is that done in-house?

      • That’s a good question, I don’t know. I think there was an article here and Trekmovie that had an interview with the designer of the screen graphics. They look like something Prologue would do but then again I got the impression they were done in-house. Post if you have an answer!

        • I see Prologue also did the titles for Star Trek Beyond.

    • Oh and those crystals at the beginning vaguely look like the little plastic Dilithium crystals that came with the Engineering playset by Playmates ages ago…

  • Marcel Anke

When I hear the soundtrack I always remember this:
    https://youtu.be/WhqtvggZAKA

    • Quintillion Tesla

I like the red bleeding into the blue/black, works really nicely. Yes, the music is quite similar!

    • M33

      FRINGE!!!
That’s exactly what this series’s opening music reminds me of!
Ahh.. it’s been bugging me for weeks.

      • mikeorgan1955

I recognised immediately its not just similar it is the Fringe theme inserted right in the middle of the sequence. Lets hope elements of Fringe are used because that is on my favourite shows of all time up there in the top 10
Its hardly surprising though as a lot of the personnel for both shows are the same

    • Justin Olson

I guess we have Akiva Goldsman to thank for the music then. He must’ve handed Russo a CD of the FRINGE main title by J.J. Abrams!

  • GIBBS v2

    Gorgeous bit of graphic design.

    • I’m wondering if the titles were done by Elastic who do stunning main titles: Game of Thrones, Westworld, The Crown and American Gods.

      • GIBBS v2

The sequence is so fresh and unexpected for the brand I am sure we will find out sooner than later.

    • Pedro Ferreira

Simplistic is the word you’re looking for.

  • So will the show use a cold-open or start immediately with the opening titles? It would be the first Star Trek show to start immediately with the opening titles (excepting TAS).

    • SpaceCadet

Maybe you already know this by now but looks like there will be the traditional cold-open before the opening titles.

  • Beige theme music to go with the beige visuals 😉

    • mr joyce

beige theme music to go with brilliant visuals more lilke 🙂

      • I think the visuals are okay, nothing particularly interesting. Not a patch on my fave opening credits sequence: https://youtu.be/Xyu_MdKBXic

        • True Detective Season 1 did have a great opening credits sequence. I also enjoy Halt and Catch Fire.

        • mr joyce

agreed on the true detective thing

        • Armand Laroche

See that’s a good opening… that you shared. As far as Discovery, I don’t kno,w the music I like the visuals for the credit sequence I do not.

  • Jaro Stun

    underwhelming to say the least

  • mr joyce

really nice visuals, music is meh

  • October_1985

I find them kind of… boring? I get that is kind of credits shows have today, but I would have prefered something more traditional. For me, they don’t convey the same emotion and excitement than the previous shows. Also, the more I hear it, the less I like the music theme… It fails completely to have a strong melody, structurally is weird. I would have prefered something more like TNG or Voyager.

    • Pedro Ferreira

It doesn’t exactly get you pumped does it?

      • October_1985

Yep, fortunately, the show itself is just the contrary, pretty exciting and quite good

        • Pedro Ferreira

So I hear if you like that awful remake of Battlestar Galactica.

          • October_1985

So I hear you are pretty full of butthurt because Discovery its not the flop you wanted it to be, huh? Go back to your cave, troll.

          • Pedro Ferreira

I hear you’re butthurt because you have a crap show. You’re the troll dude.

          • October_1985

Yeah, right. And here you are, sadly going around the boards just hating. If you were just someone that has watched and disliked the episodes, I would respect you, but you, along a few other haters, have been trolling around proclaiming how bad this show is going to be, based in just some pieces of information. You were set from the beginning to hate this, for whatever reasons you have and you don’t seem about to give a chance to the show.
Star Trek is exactly about the opposite of what you represente. Narrow minded prejudiced dumbs like you don’t belong to Star Trek fandom, and I’m pretty happy that some of those that claim to be fans are disliking Discovery. I dont’ want people like you smearing the rest of the true fandom. God riddance, I hope we don’t see you around much.

          • The Science Fiction Oracle

You nailed it. And this toll hasn’t even bothered to watch the show yet?

He’s exhibiting sociopathic behavior on this — a disturbing and kind of sad type of self-loathing trolling.

  • A_Warrior_of_Marley

I don’t know why, but the simple color palette used here and graphic design reminds me very much of Matt Jefferies’ concept drawings for TOS and Phase II.

  • Harry Kane

Love the visuals, but the music is so untrek, It is the most underwhelming theme for a star trek series. They do know they were making music for a star trek series and not a crime drama? Jerry Goldsmith and Dennis McCarthy’s productions = class It makes me laugh that people think Enterprise’s theme was the worst, All Star Trek Series and Movies had fantastic music and themes including Enterprise. Discovery’s is so meh.

    • Can’t agree with you on the music. It is a soaring, dramatic sound, very appropriate for Trek. I just don’t think it has that “hummable” quality to it that previous themes had. Also, Enterprise’s ‘theme’ was the worst. I’ve never seen a theme make so many people’s eyes roll. It’s too bad because the visuals were nicely done. Was it supposed to make it feel more ‘modern’? Instead, it has quickly dated the show; orchestral scores have more staying power.

      • The Science Fiction Oracle

Agree completely on both accounts — loved the DSC music, and Enterprise had the worst music in Star Trek history.

    • mr joyce

first time ive ever agreed with you on something lol

    • Pedro Ferreira

      It’s all poor.

  • DangerousDac

Because when I think Star Trek, I think robotic sketches on tea stained paper? Eh? This is a title sequence about Star Trek, not about Star Trek Discovery. It plays like a behind the scenes show intro about the props more than anything about the story. Are they that terrified of spoilers by not putting anything thematic in the opening titles? They’re anemic. There’s nothing too them. Held up next to almost every other opening title sequence of today these fail spectacularly.

    • Locutus

I wouldn’t be surprised if the title sequence evolves with the show. Game of Thrones did something like that. It would make these opening titles more interesting at least if they changed over time.

  • Justin Olson

This is a FANTASTIC title sequence… if the show were about the hardworking designers, scientists, and engineers who toil behind the scenes at Starfleet Command. STAR TREK: HIDDEN FIGURES. I would so be into that.

Not so sure about it working for this particular show about war with Klingons. But I will be watching in a few short hours with hope and great enthusiasm all the same like a good Trekkie/Trekker.

  • Aaron

Ooh, I really like it. Simultaneously very different than what we’ve seen with previous Star Trek series, while still being very Star Trekky. Plus, the music fits really well with the visuals (which makes the theme a bit better than it is on its own)

  • Snap

Thankfully, an opening theme and accompanying titles aren’t indicative of the quality of the actual series. I’m sorry, but I think these are the worst opening titles for a Star Trek series.

  • Toner Jean Claude

Main tittle too cartoonish non merci for me, that and the lack of a grandiose opening music theme are my con for the 1st 2 episode hope they rectify this and fast. the content its self is good love the 2 episode so far.

Bad. Very, very bad. Reminds me on Game of Thrones or similar crap.

    • Pedro Ferreira

      You sir are correct!

    • DIGINON

Well, I for one can image worse than being reminded of Game of Thrones, but to each his own. It doesn’t really remind me of Game of Thrones, either. Maybe some of the Marvel Netflix shows. Some of them also go for this kind of sketch work style.

  • The Science Fiction Oracle

Love the opening sequence…reminds me of Matt Jeffries and 60/70’s conceptual Star Trek drawings and art. Just awesome!

  • SpaceCadet

I really like the title sequence – it feels very retro and whimsical. The actual musical theme I find serviceable but memorable like the melodic themes of Goldsmith, Horner, Rosenman, Eidelman, Giacchino, McCarthy – not so much.

    • Pedro Ferreira

The Discovery theme isn’t memorable, it’s generic. There is a difference.

      • SpaceCadet

I didn’t say it was memorable if you actually took a second to see that I wrote that.

        • Pedro Ferreira

I know. I was just adding to your comment with my opinion.

    • Matthew Burns

I don’t really gravitate to it. Just watched it. I miss the space exploratory intros of the older shows. They all scream Space and Explore.

Discovery has an intro that screams, powerpoint business presentation….

      • SpaceCadet

Ha! Interesting way of looking at it. But the traveling through space motif was done on the previous 5 live action shows. I like that they tried something different.

  • Pedro Ferreira

So someone basically made a title sequence out of Discovery design sketches? Not the worst thing I’ve seen but coupled with the generic music a word comes to mind:

    https://memecrunch.com/meme/1OZO0/slacker-back-to-the-future/image.png?w=400&c=1

  • Jus_Wonderin

I love that it has Minor notes. I like it. And yes, has a Westworld vibe to it, but it is up-to-date, modern.

  • Just another J.J.Abrams brainfart. Gilligan’s Island intro would have worked better.

  • Dante Stone

I like the opening….it has grown on me, but it definitely has to be from the same people that created the Westworld opening. Can anyone confirm that?
