HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (February 8, 2013) – Continuing the series of high-definition collections celebrated by fans, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION™ – THE THIRD SEASON and STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS will both arrive on Blu-ray Disc April 30 from CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution in separate must-have sets packed with all-new special features. Both collections are the result of the painstaking restoration of the renowned series that involved returning to the original film elements. The results have critics raving that “this set will feel like you’re experiencing a brand-new show” (IGN).

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION™ – THE THIRD SEASON
Boasting an unprecedented reunion of Next Generation writers moderated by comedian and Star Trek fan Seth MacFarlane, this third season collection features an all-new feature entitled “Inside The Writer’s Room.” Including fascinating discussion on the creation of the show’s acclaimed third season by some of today’s most visionary science fiction television writers, MacFarlane leads a panel that includes Ronald Moore, Brannon Braga, Naren Shankar and Rene Echevarria. Plus, the collection is highlighted by an all-new multi-part documentary “Resistance is Futile: Assimilating The Next Generation,” which reveals behind-the-scenes insight on the making of Season Three, focusing on the drastic changes to the creative and writing staff leading to the arrival of new show runner Michael Piller. Also, the set features a special tribute to Piller, including never-before-seen interviews with cast, crew, family members and industry colleagues who all discuss his lasting influence not only on the series, but also on the Star Trek franchise as a whole. Rounding out the exclusive bonus material includes an all-new gag reel and newly produced commentary on select episodes.

The STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – THE THIRD SEASON Blu-ray is a
6-disc collection featuring all 26 episodes of the third season. Continuing to follow the remarkable voyages of the Starship Enterprise, the third season includes some of the most celebrated episodes in Star Trek canon.

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Hailed by TV Guide as one of the best television episodes of all time (Part One), STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION – THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Blu-ray features a seamlessly edited, one-part, feature length 86 minute presentation of the classic two-part cliffhanger. In this fan favorite episode, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) is captured and assimilated by the Borg. Available in high-definition for the first time ever, a centerpiece to the release is a newly-produced documentary “Regeneration: Engaging the Borg.” Offering fans an in-depth exploration into the creation of The Next Generation’s most iconic villains, along with the making of the episode, the exclusive feature includes all-new interviews with the show’s production staff, visual effects artists, writers, and cast as they reveal the challenges faced in producing one of the most technically complex episodes of the series. Plus the set includes an exclusive gag reel and all-new commentary with technical consultants Mike and Denise Okuda, actor Elizabeth Dennehy and director Cliff Bole.

A few notes on the press release. Notably absent from the Season 3 set is David Carson’s audio commentary from “Yesterday’s Enterprise” which was previously released on the “Alternate Realities” Fan Collective DVD. We’re told this couldn’t be included for contractual reasons. UPDATE: We’re told that CBS have secured David Carson’s commentary and it will be included! Ron Moore and Ira Behr’s commentary on the episode is brand new, recorded specially for the Blu-Rays. Furthermore, we’re advised that CBS were unable to include the text commentaries previously released on the Fan Collective DVD special sets, including “Deja Q” (from the Q Fan Collective DVD set), “Yesterday’s Enterprise” (from the Time Travel Fan Collective DVD set), “Sins of the Father” (from the Klingon Fan Collective DVD set) and “The Best of Both Worlds, Part I” (from the Borg Fan Collective DVD set).

Ron Moore’s commentaries are also a delight to see listed… Ron previously made it clear that he’d love to record commentaries for all of his episodes, and it looks like the team were able to schedule him for all but one this season (unfortunately a commentary on Moore’s “The Defector” is absent). Hopefully there’s enough prep-time between now and Season 4 to allow Moore to complete commentaries on all seven of his episodes in that season! Fingers crossed!

Fans can now pre-order both “The Best of Both Worlds” and Season 3 from Amazon. We’ll have more news and previews of the sets as the release date gets closer! Watch this space.

    Awesome!

  • Chris

Nice to see quite a few commentaries on this release. I hope this is the norm from now on. Ron Moore’s commentaries on the Battlestar Galactica blu-rays were always great. Can’t wait for season 3 – so many fantastic episodes: “The Enemy”, “The Defector”, “Yesterday’s Enterprise”, “Deja Q”, “Hollow Pursuits”, etc, etc. Not to mention the greatest season-ending cliffhanger in Star Trek history.

  • Quinn

Too bad about that David Carson commentary – never been able to hear that one!

    • hypnotoad72

Seconded. I loved his style as director… I didn’t know he did a commentary.

Since I didn’t pick up the alternate reality set, which I will now seek out just for the sake of listening to it… 🙂

  • falkan

    Really looking forward to this!

  • suwalski

Hopefully that get “Michael Piller” right on the actual content.

  • MiKE DEVLiN

Great to see all the Ron Moore commentaries indeed! And I hope for even more Moore on Season 4, as you say there are seven possible commentaries from Ron on that set…wow

Disappointing to see no Carson commentary, glad I got that Alternate Realities DVD set now! But will the same reason for the lack of David Carson`s commentary mean we won`t be getting Brannon Braga`s ‘Parallels’ commentary on the Season 7 blu-ray?

Also where are the text commentaries from the Okudas on ‘Yesterday`s Enterprise’ and BOBW? (which were on the Time Travel and Borg Fan Collective sets???)

    • trekcore

Not sure exactly why (the original files may have been lost), but the text commentaries from Deja Q, Yesterday’s Enterprise and BOBW will not be ported over. It’s unfortunate.

      • archer923

Again with this junk… I’d do this work for free if they let me. I’d sit in front of the DVD and retype them out. And they can’t port over the actual DVD text files. They’re special font images. That’s why they pixelate when upscaled. Ugh, annoying. The carson thing I can understand. Though bit cold on their parts.

Coming from a person who owns every ST DVD. I rather have everything in their series. Not a mess of duplicate episodes.

  • NeoSlider

Nice to see the effects back to the level of Season 1. See more or less the same shot from Q Who and The Best of Both Worlds.

    • thank you for this comparison. it hurts seeing the huge gap in quality.

    • Ashley Williams

you can still tell its the 2′ model, but its not nearly as bad.

      • hypnotoad72

It’s so much an improvement, the only real giveaway to it is the deflector dish glow.

    • Corran

Wow. can we please get a do over on S2?

      • hypnotoad72

        Seconded.

I would pay, but I’m more worried about how seasons 4 and 6 will turn out. Yes, another company other than the previous one is doing it, but that’s no reason to party just yet… 🙁

        • $38633853

Don’t worry, Season 4 and 6 will look amazing.

          • Csere Mihaly

And why are you so sure?

          • $38633853

            I just do. 🙂

          • Csere Mihaly

Well I’m worried. Especially for Birthright Part 1. You know why.

          • $38633853

            Why?

          • Csere Mihaly

First Deep Space Nine HD 😀

          • $38633853

            Ah.

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

Omg – DS9 in HD – I forgot about Birthright. The sets in DS9 were of film standard reportedly, so even more reason to get it out on Blu Ray. I really do hope I see this in less than 20 odd years.

    • XS

That’s great! Now I hope that they will hire a studio which can provide the same quality for seasons 4 and 6!
A difference like day and night.

    • Justin Olson

This is a really great example of how compositing is an art in and of itself. These two shots contain the same miniature elements (the starfield and tractor beam are different, of course).

      • $38633853

Well, the tractor beam in the Season 2 shot mimics the original SD version of the tractor beam.

      • hypnotoad72

The original elements not being possible, so the starfield and beam will invariable be recreated from scratch…

QW’s tractor beam is passable. The lack of shadow detail on the Enterprise (it’s one big gray blob with green nacelles) and the sheer lack of detail on the Borg cube a real travesty’s travesty…

    • archer923

This was the point I was trying to make with the ‘2 model before. It is a crap model. But when you have a quality compositor. It makes a whole lot of difference.

      • hypnotoad72

Especially when you have all 8 layers put back in the proper order. QW’s composition is simply APPALLING.

    • New Horizon

It’s nice to see such a direct comparison that shows just how RIGHT the complaints about season 2 were. Season 2 does deserve a complete do over.

    • hypnotoad72

Holy kitty litter, I knew “Q Who” was inconsistent, but the detail in the Borg ship is just flat trash compared to TBOBW.

I was a vocal detractor before, but seeing those two images side-by-side…

Yup. Customers were effectively robbed with season 2.

Thank you MUCH for posting the comparison shots.

    • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I was going to do the same thing and post those comparison shots that you did. Just didn’t get the time. Thanks for posting them – I knew that this would re-ignite the whole ‘Season 2 was ruined by HTV’ discussion.

Doesn’t that cube look amazing…in the proper composited shot. What a difference. I agree that even the 2-foot model looks good in the new shot. The cube has so many different metallic colours – it’s gorgeous.

  • Matt Littledyke

Excellent can’t wait I have already pre-ordered both

    • hypnotoad72

      Same here!

  • trekker670

I’m slightly disappointed, there aren’t any wow-ing special features like deleted scenes

    • Matt_Cardiff_UK

The enhanced EDIT: New explosion of the cube more than makes up for any deleted scenes….for me. It’s a sign of great things to come with Season 3.

    • Sypher

You think deleted scenes are a guaranteed wow? The one’s from season two were kind of useless. The commentaries are much more wowing.

  • hypnotoad72

Oh goody! Nice to see TBOBW pre-order button icon for the US! 🙂

  • NeoSlider

Here’s a comparison of a shot from the DVD and from The Best Of Both Worlds trailer.

    • NeoSlider

      And another one!

      • NeoSlider

        And one more!

        • NeoSlider

          Here’s a couple more!

      • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I knew that cube explosion had been enhanced! 🙂 I love you CBS!

        • trekcore

The cube shot looks fantastic, doesn’t it? We’ll have an uncompressed full HD 1080p version of the trailer up for download soon

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I love you too TrekCore! 🙂 lol It’s just soooo nice to be hyped up about the remastering again. Just like with Season 1, I’m already over the moon with the standard of work gone into this. CBS have again gone above and beyond the call of duty, and remained faithful to the series and its deep-pocketed fans…I wonder who is responsible for Season 4? Will Season 2’s issues ever be addressed by CBS themselves? Questions….questions….excitement…..glorious cubes in 1080p….I can’t take it any more!

        • archer923

Well it’s been replaced. You wouldn’t call it an enhancement.

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

Agreed – it’s been replaced. Nice job too. I don’t have an issue with replacement effects when the original effects didn’t quite stand up to the test of time. Here’s wondering if the 3 camera shots of the Enterprise blowing up in ‘Cause and Effect’ will be redone – I never thought they were too great even back then.

          • archer923

Funny. I talked about all this before in the other S3 thread.

          • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I’ll refrain from posting anything else for now then.

          • archer923

Why stop? I just said I was talking about this in another thread. Go keep on posting pictures.

          • MalcolmTucker

I really hope they make a similar effort to upgrade the Enterprise explosion effects in the same way the cube explosion has been enhanced. I’ve always seen it as a VFX gaff that the port nacelle explodes yet the starboard nacelle was the one damaged in the collision.

    • $38633853

You can tell that first shot is redone with CG, the higly compressed version from CBSHEonDVD doesn’t allow for the full quality to be seen, have to wait until TrekCore releases the uncompressed 1080p video…

    • Corran

Is that the CG Enterprise? something about the lines seem just a little too clean, the windows a touch sharper than usual. If it is, it’s the best it’s been lit so far.

  • Matt_Cardiff_UK

“This blu-ray release takes the 2-part episode and lost footage to make it into a 90 minute feature.” this is according to Hi-Def Ninja http://www.hidefninja.com/2013/02/09/best-of-both-worlds-a-star-trek-the-next-generation-feature-is-releasing-in-april/

No idea how reliable this source is – so I’ll take it with a big pinch of salt.

    • trekcore

It’s a FAAAAKE! There is no lost footage included. Just original, beautiful, glorious HD Borginess 🙂

      • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I didn’t think so…maybe just ill-informed than fake…I’ll stick to TrekCore for the official news 🙂

  • George

I really see a lot of sells for season 3. Anyways i coudnt avoid to notice that crappy detail on the enterprise in the side from the screencap of the firing deflector beam.

    • Quinn

That’s because the YouTube copy that CBS Home Entertainment put up is really heavily compressed video… we’ll be putting up an uncompressed, full-HD version soon!

      • New Horizon

I’m wondering if he was likely commenting on the state of the 4 foot model. It’s really not very a very nice looking version of the ship. They really ruined the look of the D when they made it.

  • Matt Littledyke

Will this feature length cut have the 10 seconds of footage that was cut out the last time they edited it into feature length back in the 90’s

    • archer923

That’s how you’d combine it. You can’t have the same footage play twice.

      • Matt Littledyke

I’m talking about the bit at the beginning of part 2 after the recap where they are preparing the deflector to fire as last time they edited it into feature length they had Riker saying fire then it went straight to the deflector firing.

        • archer923

Ah I get what you mean. They edited out the stuff where it charges. It was probably a pacing thing.

  • I hope so too. I actually want them to do something about the shot where the enterprise is spinning and then stops dead still as it explodes. The physics are astronomically wrong and it shits me. I’d like to see a good new CGI shot; similar, but less crappy.
