Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 6 Blu-ray Trailer Debuts!

The wait is over! We've got a special treat for everyone today - CBS has just released the very first look at Star Trek: The Next Generation - Season 6 on Blu-ray, coming this June!

The trailer cleverly brings together several common themes from TNG's sixth season and can roughly be divided into three sections - "Legends", "History" and "Inner Demons".

The majority of fans will undoubtedly be thrilled by the long awaited debut of space station Deep Space Nine in the "Legends" strand, complete with a nice look at Dr. Bashir in high definition ("Birthright"). "History" is no less potent, with a whimsical look at some of TNG Season 6's most memorable period pieces including "A Fistful of Datas" and "Ship in a Bottle".

Finally, things take a turn for the serious with "Inner Demons" as we're treated to a look at the hard-hitting episodes "Chain of Command" and "Frame of Mind". Topping off the trailer, the VAM preview holds a bit of a surprise this season with a special look at a rather unique deleted scene - the long-since rumored Scotty/Troi encounter!

To wrap up this initial look at Season 6, here's a closer glimpse at the Season Six cover art, featuring Picard, La Forge, and Crusher (the same trio from the Season 3 cover), on a rather striking purple background.

Why is DS9 grey? I always thought it was brown?

    • http://www.trekcore.com/ TrekCoreStaff

      The model itself was a tannish-grey: http://i.imgur.com/XJpdBus.jpg

      • pittrek

I’ve never seen the model before, so I’m REALLY grateful for this picture :-) BTW does somebody have an idea where can I see all the other studio models please?

    • Matt_Cardiff_UK

That’s VHS and DVD for ya! I was pleased with the Star Trek: Starships model of DS9 because it came in grey.

  • James G.

I like this one. They included some nice money shots, like the Enterprise shot from Birthright dream. Nice case too. I see they used that same Birthright shot for the Enterprise on the case. First time the 4-footer graces the case.

The DS9 model sure looks great. Bashir in HD….whoooooa. My only gripe is that they didn’t include scenes from the DS9 set.

    • Brian

I’m okay with it not including any live action shots. It would have been nice, but it would have also spoiled the surprise when the set comes out.

    • Allen Williams

we won’t see ops, but we will see the prominode.

  • Matt_Cardiff_UK

Eye orgasm coming on – DS9 is gonna be great in 1080p. So CBS-D – what’s the schedule? No out-sourcing mind – look where that got us before. #justsaying Looking forward to Summer!!

    • milojthatch

I get that this will make me unpopular, but I’m ok with just DVD for DS9 and Voyager. They both existed in a time period before HD (like Enterprise), but the effects are actually really good (unlike TOS and TNG). I don’t feel that TOS, TNG or Enterprise double dips on Blu-ray from DVD are double dipping. I do have ever feel that would not be the case with DS9 and Voyager. I just can’t see Blu-ray making either show “that much better” than DVD and worthy of my hard earned money.

      • James G.

You think that now, but I’m sure your tune will change when we start seeing HD live action footage for DS9 and Voyager.

      • Matt_Cardiff_UK

I have to admit that I love everything from TOS to VOY – I never enjoyed Enterprise or JJ’s movies.

So seeing DS9′s ‘Sacrifice of Angels’ or VOY’s ‘Scorpion’ in HD for example, will make me very happy.

Not everyone likes all incarnations of Trek – so no, I don’t think it will make you unpopular. :-)

        • Jamie

Scorpion & Sacrifice of Angels in HD, I’m with you all the way there Matt!

Any Star Trek from TOS to Enterprise is great, I also have no time for the JJ remakes.

        • hypnotoad72

I agree. Not all will like every incarnation – the fans of each serious would love to see it in HD. I may not like DS9, but I’d cheer for that camp anyway. Restoration work is always cool, regardless.

      • Bruce Aguilar

If DS9 and Voyager get the HD treatment and if they come to iTunes as TNG-R has, I’m planning to buy a few selected episodes of each (20 tops) instead of the BD’s. They’re definitely lesser Trek to me (especially DS9).

But I’m not focusing on other shows right now. This season 6 STTNG trailer is one of the better trailers we’ve gotten for the remasters. The purple cover is beautiful and I’m DYING to see the entire scene with Troi and Scotty! Make it so!

      • Sykes

I’m happy that you’re okay with the DVDs of DS9 and VOY. Thankfully it ain’t up to you. ;-)

      • shanebroughton

TNG’s model shots are far superior to Voyager’s CGI.

        • Sky

Rally True!! TNG Effects now can hold up to current cinema productions and sometimes looks even better/more realistic!!

          • hypnotoad72

Almost always. “Into Darkness” often looked photorealistic – tons of money was pumped into that flick…

          • shanebroughton

ST09 and Into Darkness would look great if they’d stop shaking the damn camera. I can’t wait for Hollywood to get over that fad.

          • Sky

Oh yeah, this cam shaking makes me crazy too, and it also destroys scenes that would have looked great without it! Its even totally useless to shake the camera almost all the time! If there’s action I want to see exactly what’s going on IN FRONT OF THE CAM, don’t want to see the “action” of how strong the cam is shaking!!

        • hypnotoad72

Modern CGI is virtually photorealistic – “Unification” may have dated badly (and in 1991 it was a disappointing experience to sit through), but the newly made CGI scenes are fantastic. VOY and TOS (yeah, a quintuple-dip but I bet the CGI masters still exist and could just be re-rendered with the superior software and server farms) would look better if done now.

      • Allen Williams

SD is never good enough. I can’t go back. I agree with the fact that unlike TNG, DS9 and Voy are both DVD quality though. However some of the CGI needs a major makeover.

      • archer9234

Nah its cool. Everyone has taste.

  • mjdavid

I loved the trailer, I think the sequencing in this trailer is better than a couple of the others. I’m also very, VERY excited about seeing Deep Space Nine in 1080p HD. As the HD journey of TNG winds down, I’m hopeful we’ll perhaps get a sampler disc of the next series to be remastered later this year. “Legends,” “History,” and “Inner Demons…” I wonder if those categories have something to do with the documentaries for Season Six.

  • milojthatch

I’m excited and that Scotty scene looks funny!

    • shanebroughton

Must’ve been very satisfying for the writer’s to unload on Troi’s job. :-)

  • James G.

If anyone is keeping tabs, Picard has been featured on the front of all 6 sets so far (of course), and with the exception of Data, everyone else of the main cast has now been featured twice. (Guinan was featured in season 4).

So I suspect season 7 will feature Data and Riker (for a third time), matching the season 1 lineup. They’ve used the same colors as the original DVD sets, though in a different order. The last remaining color is orange, so I suspect season 7 will be that color.

    • Justin Olson

Season 2 was kind of a yellow-orange or gold. They made Season 3 green instead of the yellow the DVD was. Perhaps Season 7 will be lighter pink? Or even just silver.

    • Chris915
      • James G.

It’s more yellowish gold to me, and not orange. Though maybe going red, gold, green, teal, blue, purple, the final color will be something dark, maybe maroon.

        • Chris915

Well, Amber is midway between yellow and orange… with RGB values of (255, 126, 0).

          • mjdavid

I was thinking silver would be a great color for Season Seven.

  • Matthew Boston

Can someone tell me where the music that starts at 0:35 in the trailer comes from? I have heard it is some of the other trailers too.

  • spooky

Wow! I can’t to get my hands on this but June seems like such a long way off. (:0
Oh well, I hope it is because they are working their butts off on Season 7 and DS9, “fingers crossed”.
Oh to see the DS9 Intro in HD will give me goose bumps, especially with that haunting series one music.
I imagine that they will put the DS9 Season 1 trailer in the TNG Season 7 Blu-ray… again, hoping! :0
It sure is a great time to be a classic Trek fan though. :D

    • Matt_Cardiff_UK

It’s always a great time to be a classic Trek fan! :D This is just cherries on the icing on the HD cake that keeps on giving! We WILL see DS9 in HD!

    • mjdavid

I would LOVE a DS9 trailer on either this set or the Season Seven set – or even a sampler disc later in the year. I’m not holding my breath because I don’t want to get my hopes up. I’d like to think that’s why they took so long to release Season Six after Season Five, but at this point I’d much rather all the releases be handled in-house by CBS-D so if that means we wait a little longer for it I’m fine.

  • SpaceCadet

Finally! I’ve been waiting for this announcement for what seems like forever! Season 6 is my favorite season of TNG consistency-wise after season 3 so this will be a great batch of episodes before the last season’s noticeable decline in quality (although season 7 has a few of my favorite episodes of the series overall). Anyway, June can’t get here fast enough. And someone correct me if I’m wrong, but in the trailer, is that a deleted scene from Time’s Arrow, Part II where most of the cast is gathered together in period costume? I don’t remember that from the episode at all. And it has visual effects which isn’t typical for a deleted scene so maybe I’m just going crazy?!?

    • Chris915

That’s when they first try to activate that serpent cane thing…

      http://tng.trekcore.com/gallery/albums/s6/6×01/timesarrowparttwo268.jpg

      • SpaceCadet

Ah, thanks. I clearly haven’t seen that episode in awhile!

        • jerr

I never noticed Crusher’s booty before it’s even hard to see in that pic… thanx 1080p LOL

          • Allen Williams

that isn’t 1080p that looks like the dvd. You can tell because the colors look like crap.

          • jerr

that’s why I said you can’t see it in “that pic” because that pic is a DVD screen grab. I sure noticed it in the new trailer ;-)

          • mjdavid

Most dresses from that time period put an accentuation on a female’s rear end by making it appear larger, a sort of fashion statement at the time.

    • mjdavid

LOL there were a few questionable episodes in Season Seven. Maybe that set will feature commentary with Gates McFadden making fun of “Sub Rosa.”

  • SpaceCadet

I really, really would like to see an episode commentary by the cast members for once. That would make me very, very happy.

And it would be really, really cool if they had a supplement where they have character and alien race profiles, starship gallery and specs, and a galaxy map with the Federation and prominent empires highlighted. I’m sure the Okudas would love to work on that. If any one has seen the Game of Thrones blu-ray sets, which are excellent, then you have a template of what I’m talking about.

    • mjdavid

Perhaps they’ll record one for “All Good Things…”

  • Alex Huffman

Please, CBS, DS9 and VOY too!!! I want to see it all in crisp, clear HD goodness!!!

    • hypnotoad72

You make it sound like breakfast toast!

But, yeah, Voyager on Blu would be sweet… seasons 4-7 of DS9 and seasons 4-7 of Voyager are, strangely enough, when both series started to consistently shine…

    • Chris Benoit

DS9, yes! Voyager, NO THANK YOU!

Along with seasons 1 and 2 of Enterprise is the worst example of writing in Star Trek.

  • Jonny Roon

I just can’t wait to see DS9 coming to Blu ray. CBS has done such a wonderful job with TNG on Blu ray I actually bought a new (bigger) TV to get the most out of it!

    • OphidianJaguar

Yea, DS9 is what I am waiting for, I am extremely excited for seasons 4-7.

    • Apocalypse

I really hope there we will have the chance of having DS9 on blu ray. It was my favorite Star Trek series. From what I have gathered, it seems it will be more complicated the have DS9 on blu ray than The Next Generation.

Another one, we want really bad on blu ray is Babylon 5.

  • Jaro

Wow, finally! What a trailer! After S4 & S5 rather slow trailers here we go again. Can’t wait for this to hit stores, but even more so, can’t wait for the magical breaking news – DS9 in HD announcement.

  • Jaro

Pls will there be 1080p non youtube version soon?

    • trekcore

Yep – we’ll have it up on the site in the next week or so with full analysis!

  • pittrek

Well, just one deleted scene this year? Nevertheless I’m looking forward to this season

    • trekcore

Whoever said there was just one? Season 6 is FULL of deleted scenes!

      • pittrek

I had to re-watch the trailer again, and you’re correct, he says “INCLUDING one with …” – I misheard that part originally. So, even more reasons to be looking forward to it :-)

  • Sky

I hope “Times Arrow” will come as feature film too!!!!

    • mjdavid

“Time’s Arrow” was the season 5 finale/season 6 premiere. If they were doing “Time’s Arrow” they wouldn’t have done “Chain of Command.” The next one will be from Season Seven, it would have to be “Descent” or “All Good Things…”

      • Gilbetron

Re: Season 7. This is what worries me. I will be beside myself if they choose to do a separate release for “All Good Things,” since that episode already appears unaltered on the season sets. There would be *nothing* different, except to split the VAM, which would be silly. So they better do “Descent” or “Gambit.”

        • Gilbetron

That said, an extended version of “All Good Things” would mollify my concerns immensely…

          • mjdavid

Perhaps instead of a 30 minute doc on the single disc of “All Good Things…,” should it be chosen, we could get a good hour with loads of cast and crew interviews, Brannon and Rick, discussions about why they chose to make their film that year instead of doing another season (which the ratings would have supported) … there’s a lot they could discuss … then that would leave the two docs on the Season Seven set for other discussions about that year.

I really enjoyed “Descent” (mainly because they FINALLY thew Beverly Crusher a bone in the second part, although I don’t think they wrote her strong enough) and “Gambit” but I don’t think they would stack up as a standalone disc. Perhaps we won’t get one for Season Seven? Perhaps they’ll take all the extra VAM from it and just load it on to the Season Seven set.

          • SpaceCadet

The producers and the studio decided to transition the production from tv to films because in spite of the high ratings, the show was becoming very expensive from a production standpoint. There were already more than enough episodes in syndication for them to profit from, and they could make even more money by doing movies. Besides, DS9 was already on TV, and they were about to come out with Voyager to launch UPN, so three Trek shows on TV would have been overkill. And I think it was the right time for TNG to bow out on TV just based on the overall decline in quality during the 7th season.

          • mjdavid

What I meant is it would be interesting to hear the actors’ individual perspectives – this many years out – on transitioning from TV to film. I don’t disagree it was time to bow out; there were many more interesting stories they could have told but seven years is a great run. Plus, it was time for DS9 to stand on its own. This is one of the things I enjoy hearing actors talk about; they don’t make the production decisions but they play these characters so their points-of-view would be interesting to hear.

          • hypnotoad72

Which is odd, since seasons 6 and 7 often look low-budget. I recall the season 7 two-parter with Robin Curtis looking for ancient Vulcan bling, and a friend I was with was going “This is going to look great!” as Robin put the bling into the gizmo. What does the gizmo do? Light up six incandescent bulbs or something… hardly an expensive prop…

I found season 7 to be refreshing (and truer sci-fi again!) after two years of what was by and large menial “soap opera in space where they can’t hear the audience scream” that seasons 5 and 6 bathed in, complete with muzak that sounded like they fired Ron Jones and hired a chorus of farting frogs instead…

TNG was originally set for 8 seasons, but cut down because of DS9 and the apparent need to rush the TNG crew to the big screen…

    • Allen Williams

It won’t. I guess I’ll have to break out makeMKV, and adobe premiere. I’ve never used premiere so it will be interesting. I have had good luck with makeMKV though. Every time its because I wanted a screenshot. God forbid powerdvd to be able to do that. Stupid DRM.

      • archer9234

Anydvd hd disables bd copy prtection then use in conjection with vlc. Then u can take screensots.

        • Allen Williams

except its no longer pay once. It requires a sub now and makeMKV is free.

          • Chris915

Well, as long as MakeMKV is in beta… you can use the beta key, but you gotta purchase a full license if you want it to function indefinitely.

        • Allen Williams

I don’t think its unreasonable for powerDVD to support screenshots though. Its not like you’re copying the movie. Just a single frame. That qualifies under fair use.

          • Chris915

Yea, it was a bummer when I loaded up WinDVD and couldn’t take snapshots either.

    • Sykes

I’d be willing to bet we’ll see feature length releases of the “missing” double eps after the seasons are all out. They are a very cheap thing to make (not counting extras) and it could keep the money flowing in. They could do a ‘best of’ set, a ‘movie edit’ set, and as many theme sets as they feel like. All these were done on DVD.

  • shanebroughton

    It’s about bloody time!

  • TNGCap

BEST TRAILER YET! Perfect choice of clips CBS :D

  • StalwartUK

DS9 looks great in HD I have to say.

Can’t wait to see some interior shots.

  • James

Damn – that looks fantastic, what a great trailer.

Totally loving the deleted scene with Troi and Scotty.

  • Paul Anderson

Looking forward to this set, love the purple artwork. I’m assuming CBS-D has took on both seasons which would explain the six month wait since season 5? And that S7 will be December time? It feels like forever, I thought the four months between Season 1-2 and Season 3-4 felt long, but this… haha.

Slightly off-topic, but does anyone know if the UK season 2 set came with a card outer sleeve? All my others did, and I’ve never seen s2 onsale with one, and it upsets my OCD.

    • Brian

The US versions have all had slipcovers included.

    • Mike Jones

I feel your OCD pain, my Season 1 set lacks a slip cover which bugs me immensely.

      • Brian

Agreed. I bought the TOS Series set (the official release from Amazon, shrink-wrapped and everything). It included S1&2 with the slipcovers, but no slip for S3. It’s ridiculous, but I eventually broke and bought the slip for $10 off eBay

      • Allen Williams

I hate those things. I throw them away every single time and wonder why waste the cardboard to make it? I also hate the fact that movies like Back to the future 1-3 aren’t packaged like a season boxset of star trek. I would rather have it be in a standard case than a stupid book that doesn’t match my blu-ray collection.

        • AndyPerkins

Back to the Future Trilogy is available in a single amaray case.

      • vincanss

Unfortunately you have to buy these things quite early, they all have the cardboard slips when they first come out. I have one for all of them apart from s2.

      • mjdavid

It’s probably only the first couple pressings of the product that receive the slip cover. I have also always purchased online (or in the case of TNG S4 at my local Target on release date) and I’ve always received the slip cover. I purchased a second copy of S1 for a friend as a Christmas gift this past year and it did not have one when it arrived. So my guess is after the first couple of pressings they stop.

    • Muzer

All mine have. I tend to buy online, though.

    • Chris915

Well, the wait appears longer, because, they outsourced 2 and 4… so one has to look at the time between 1 and 3 and 3 and 5 and see it’s about the same time between 5 and 6… because CBS-D is doing the final 3 seasons. :)

  • FedUp

As good as Season 3…if not better.

  • Guest

Deep Space Nine. The best Star Trek no one ever saw.

    • mjdavid

I don’t know about other markets, but where I lived at the time Deep Space Nine (which was of course also syndicated) was always shown late on Saturday night after late local news. However, I did read somewhere (it was sometime last year so that’s all I can tell you, I don’t know if it was ever substantiated) that since Netflix started streaming all of the Trek series Deep Space Nine is the most viewed on that service. If that’s the case it could be that people are now recognizing what a great series it was.

  • archer9234

This was a very well done trailer. Im happy we saw a small taste of ds9. don’t spoil all if it. June isnt that bad.

  • Sky

Unfortunately they didn’t fix the size of Q and the Girl Q standing outside on the Enterprise. They are too tall.

    • Chris915

Could be the perspective, notice the wide FOV on the Enterprise…

    • Matthew Boston

or it could because they’re Q and can change there size.

  • James G.

I notice in the trailer that the deleted scenes appear color corrected. The deleted scenes in the previous seasons looked pretty raw without the popping color. Was this just for the trailer to make it more consistent with the episode footage, or have they ‘finished’ the deleted scenes?

    • trekcore

From the perspective of the trailer, it was to ensure a more consistent look. I don’t anticipate the scenes will be color corrected for the final set.

  • Frontier

    DS9 in HD = :9~~~ drool worthy

  • Neill Stringer

    when they available in UK

  • bytes

Special features for the Bluray sets have been described as including all special features that were on the DVD sets. Back then, Best Buy included an extra DVD. I was once lucky enough to have one for Season 7. When I watched it, it was the same format as the rest of the interviews. As if it was just a missing disc. Does anyone know if these retailer specific features are also included in the Bluray releases?

  • Apocalypse

Very, very nice the trailer for season 6 of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

  • Jason

for the uk, Star TNG Season 6 bluray from amazon.co.uk, has been pushed back to july, 21

    st….FYI

  • StefanoR99

Feel that the remaster without open matte 16:9, restoring the extra information that was cropped for TV is a missed opportunity. Yes it would have been more work as the sides of the film were degraded or showed crew / props, but the technology is there to restore the film and remove the props digitally. CBS could have even crowd sourced the extra work… such a shame :(

Looking forward to seeing Voyager on Bluray though. Hopefully they will be able to 16:9 that and pay extra special attention to 7 of 9′s uniform.
