Well, it’s been almost a year since news first broke about La-La Land’s planned Star Trek: 50th Anniversary soundtrack collection – and as part of a wave of Black Friday announcements, they’ve finally made it official: this new collection arrives on November 29!

st50-tracks

This upcoming four-disc collection spans the entire prime Star Trek universe, from the Original Series to Star Trek: Enterprise, touching on a few Trek films, and some unexpected sources like the now-closed Las Vegas Star Trek: The Experience adventures “Klingon Encounter” and “Borg Invasion 4D”, along with the Star Trek: Borg PC game music previously released in 2013’s Star Trek: Music from the Video Games soundtrack.

Most surprising, though, is the inclusion of more than 30 minutes of music from Star Trek: The Animated Series, long though lost to time! Back in 2012, La-La Land producer Jeff Bond told us about the issues facing TAS’s music:

The other thing that people would probably like to see – and I don’t know if it’s possible or practical – is music from The Animated Series. That was done only a few years after the Original Series by a great composer named Ray Ellis who did almost all of the Filmation cartoon music.

The Animated Series music was very memorable, although they didn’t do a lot of music for the show. My guess is there’s probably thirty or forty minutes of music at the very most because they basically created more of a library for that show and tracked it through the episodes.

The problem is that Filmation went through a number of ownerships and I’m not sure if CBS have access to the original music elements. According to Ray all of that stuff was destroyed long ago. There can always be dubs and copies floating around, but as far as I know there’s nothing in great quality that you could put together for another release.

That’s something that people might like to see, but it’s not certain if it could be done.

Despite these hurdles, La-La Land’s team has managed to reconstruct the collected Animated Series tracks for this new release – not an easy undertaking – as producer Neil Bulk explained briefly via Twitter overnight:

https://twitter.com/nsbulk/status/802066828377735169
Producer Lukas Kendall took to the Film Score Monthly message boards this morning to drop some more details about the formation of this set… and also revealed that there’s not only the expected Star Trek: Voyager soundtrack coming in January – but there’s also a second Voyager set already in the works, as well as a follow-up to 2013’s Star Trek: Deep Space Nine collection on the way too!

  • Newdivide1701

    So no Sledgehammer, then.

  • Locutus

Personally, I would have preferred more of a “Star Trek Greatest Hits” for a 50th anniversary release. Animated Series music doesn’t really interest me either.

But La-La Land prides itself on previously unreleased material, which I can respect. For completists that buy La-La Land releases, it looks like the set includes a lot of previously unreleased material.

  • Cabo 5150

TAS soundtrack = immediate order for me!

  • Madis

Where is the classic “Tiny Little Lifeforms” by the maestro himself?

    • Neil K

thats on the generations 2 disc soundtrack

  • archer923

This collection gives a win to me. I just need my Voyager soundtracks lol.

    • Zarm

      Seriously! So much great music!

  • Sykes

It’s a pity that DS9, VOY, and ENT are such afterthoughts but this still looks like a great set. Definite buy for me.

    • Luckily ENT has it’s own two-volume set, and there’s more dedicated DS9 and Voyager on the way!

      • Sykes

Don’t get me wrong, this sounds like a great release regardless.

  • Jon Witchell

It appears that small cue from Spock’s Brain I said was missing several years back, from the TOS Soundtrack Collection is present on the 50th Album:

    http://trekcore.com/blog/2016/11/musical-surprises-fill-la-la-lands-trek-50th-soundtrack/

The TOS CD came in at 1.10, but the same listing comes in at 2.31 on the new set. One of my favourite cues, a pity it can’t be made available to those of us who bought the TOS Boxset. Was it missed off the former in error, or only recently found, I wonder?

  • Vger64

A few months ago I thought I was going to pass on this set. Boy was I wrong.

  • mythme

while its nice to have the music from the ST Experience, will we ever get to SEE those clips released to the masses someday?

  • Jamie

Not to look a gift horse in the mouth, but, why does TNG have 2 discs and DS9, VOY and ENT are all squashed onto the 4th disc with barely any representation?

I’m disappointed and this is 1 set I’m going to hold back on for a while, maybe even get it 2nd hand off ebay.

DS9, VOY, ENT all have great music which could have been included.
Jay’s VOY: “Scorpion” theme and his ENT: “Azati Prime” themes and the “Badda Bing” Promenade walk themes should have been in this set.

I think the “Lessons” tracks from TNG are slightly redeeming this set, but not enough to undo the lack of DS9, VOY and ENT.

    • ldkendal

Hi Jamie, there was so much DS9, VOY and ENT we wanted to release that they are getting their own 4CD sets (or in the case of Enterprise Vol 2, it was released earlier this year). Keep the suggestions coming! -Lukas Kendall

      • Jamie

But despite many requests the music from ENT “Azati Prime” was still not included in either the 2nd volume of ENT or this 50th Anniversary set.

I think a 3rd ENT set is needed, and it also needs to have the Cold Station 12 pre-credits recap fanfare by Jay Chattaway too.

        Thank you

        • ldkendal

Hi Jamie, I understand your disappointment—I am sorry but the way these discs fill up with music that people want, for every cue we add, something has to be deleted. Hopefully the albums will keep coming and we can get to Azati Prime and other wants!

  • Cameron

Shame there is no Starfleet Academy game soundtrack which was really great.

  • Vger64

So is that for real? No more La-La Land TNG sets?? Dang! I will be Happy to buy a Volume 3 if they make it

    • grandadmiralbinks

To be frank, I my humble opinion, apart from The Ron Jones Project, TNG has the weakest music of them all, due to restrictions which were being put on composers. DS9, VOY and ENT are MUCH better. I can’t wait for the VOY set in january!

      • Jamie

I agree to a degree with your observation.
I liked a lot of TNG music but there was more freedom in DS9, VOY and especially ENT.
I’m really hoping we get more ENT and DS9 sets and also many VOY sets too.

  • grandadmiralbinks

Just the inclusion of TAS music is a complete win for me. I was not expecting this and am pleasantly surprised. I cannot wait, day 1 buy for me.

  • Pedro Ferreira

Nice to see Star Trek Borg OST get a physical retail release. Great stuff.

  • Mo

I wish the TAS material could be released separately. I already have the TOS set, and I’m not very interested in the games.
